The truck is driven both on the street and in the woods. Gears are definately in order, And we may end up going with a one ton rear and 8 lug outers up front, but for now 3.55s and the low side of the t case is going to be the trucks friend I reckon. It does pretty good with 33s and third gear 4 low. But I know like y'all said 35s will be a different story.
8.8. It already has a chipped tooth, but were just going to run it til it obliterates, there are plenty more cheap 8.8s around here. I mentioned the one ton rear only because one day he plans to go big, as in 44". That probably won't be too soon, but I figure it'll happen sooner or later.
I know it seems I'm jumping all over the place, but for now it's just going to be halfton with a max of 38s. We'll probably gear it first and then drop a v8 in. A 351w is currently the motor of choice because its a little easier swap.
It'll rock half tons for a while. The 208 has a pretty good reduction so gearing will probably be fine where it's at for now.
I have never ran a 351w, but from what I gather from y'all is its not worth running with big tires? The only reason we were thinking the 351w was it would be an easy swap, and hopefully would be more cost effective with gas mileage and so (which may or may not be true).
What kind of money/mods are we talking to get a 351w swapped and built to turn 44s as opposed to a 460?
Granted this down the road, the 300 will do for now, we're just trying to figure out what direction to go in.
the 208 will help but it still wont be enough gearing in my opinion.
the 460 will make so much more torque at a much lower RPM than the 351. you could prolly buy a 460/c6 for 5-600 and drop another grand in it and have a damn good running truck

^^^This.
351w's are very good motors but knowing what you have in mind I wouldnt waste my time or money with anything less than a 460. A full rebuild making 400-500 streetable horsepower (a 400-500hp 351w will be pretty expensive and be quite snotty stoplight to stoplight or on trails) can be had for less than $2000 including machine shop fees and all new parts. -Ask Paul.
Im also partial to a C6 in a mud/trail truck but you did say you had a 4spd....Ill assume t-19 or 435? Both are very strong and easily capable of holding up to 44s and say 500hp. Regardless, a bellhousing will be pretty cheap (I paid $40 for one not too long ago) compared to a used C6 of questionable condition.
i run a 429 d3 heads completely stock with a cam an intake. i race against a chevy with a 434 sbc. Last year i waxed its *** 7 outta 10 races both running 38's. this year it has 44s under it and i have beat it 2 outta 3 races and have not gone outta that particular pit this year so in distance i have kept up with much smaller tires. last race it beat me due to mine overheating an i had to shut it down an it beat me by 12' i was still crawling when i shut the truck off.
