Undercoating Recommendations?

So I've had my truck for about 3 years now. And ever since I got it I have always sprayed Rust-Oleum Rubberized Undercoating on everything under the truck once or twice a year. I originally did it because I just didn't want to look at the rust coating everything under my truck. And I've also been told it will help slow down the rust.

But It seems like It just flakes off after about after a year or so. I know the best way to do it is to strip it clean of all the rust, but this is my only truck, and I'm too busy right now to strip everything under there.

So I guess what I'm asking is, is what I'm doing ok? Or am I just trapping moisture with the undercoating and making things worse?

While not quite as effective as undercoating, I've been using Sprayon 777 Outdoor Metal Protectorant. It's good for inside door panels, tail gates, and other places filled with nooks and cranies that get moisture but not a full washdown like the wheel wells do. Good for the inside of the frame rails.

I apply it once a year, usually in August when the weather is driest.

You are trapping moisture under the undercoat and making things WORSE.

I suggest power washing EVRY LAST SPECK of undercoat off, sanding, grinding or sandblasting the frame(I suggest sandblasting) then use a QUALITY paint.NOT undercoat

What about POR-15? After getting everything sandblasted,or however you get it clean, this is what most use that I know. I ordered some the other day.

I've been using this rust reformer, but not long enough to give you any long term results. It seems to be just the right thing, short of sandblasting.

Heres a rust repair thread I made a while back if you are interested.

That's what I was afraid of.
I would like to be able to take the time to strip it and sandblast everything, but it is my daily driver and my only means of transportation.

I'll probably give this a shot after I get whats left of the undercoating off.

Undercoating of any kind is definitely a bad idea. Get it all off of there.

POR-15 is to seal the frame, etc. and is really good stuff Eastman carries it. Anytime you do anything like this, prep is so important. Prep very good on your frame and all metal and sprayed, and brush my frand supports, etc. Put POR-15 on with a brush or spray, i used a brush, let it dry good. Then I got Lizard Skin and sprayed my engine bay and used a brush and spray underneath the whole body, the inside of doors, etc, with panels off, etc. and where ever you think you want to sound proof and protect from high heat. This stuff can withstand temps up to 500-800 degrees. There was a picture on their site where an old ****** had been done and the garage burned up, and it was saved because of Lizard Skin coatings. Racers use it too for heat and sound deadening. On the POR-15 study what you want to do,etc and talk to Eastwood tech & cust svc. & Lizard Skin cust svc.

The best thing that me and my dad have found is spraying drain oil on the under carrige, first its free if you change your oil and it protects just as good as any. It is a little messy though but we just park the trucks on the dirt and let them drain. A lot of people say it dont work, well it does cause after going through winter with all the crap on the roads my jeep and my dads truck look the same and we both plow as well

What would be the easiest way to get it off? I'm not sure my pressure washer will be able get rid of it all.

Try the pressure washer. A heated one may work better, if you can borrow one. I usually just had to scrape it all off. A friend of mine used aircraft stripper on his car, but that could get expensive.

I always wanted to try hooking up to the drain on the water heater with a pressure washer... should work pretty good.

The pressure washer I have now is only a small one (1700 PSI I think), but I'll give it a shot. If that doesn't do anything I'll try to get my hands on a heated one.
