Okay guys I have been reading posts and now my eyes feels like bleeding. I need to find a product that will save my truck from rust. I dont want to apply the stuff every year. I have come to find that the two main brands that people are useing are Rust bullet and Por 15. So I hear good and some bad about both but just cant make up my mind. So I dont know if a poll has been done here yet but thought that I would try one.
I voted for POR-15, b/c I used it and it is some very good stuff, but a little pricey.
I would use it again, and I recommend it, but I see nothing wrong with Rust Bullet. I almost got that instead, and right now don't remember why I didn't.
See what everyone says, and what ever sounds like the best, use that one. OR if the poll comes out to a tie, choose the cheaper one, and you should have great results either way.
I first used POR-15 about six years ago on a Datsun 280Zx I was playing with. Unfortunately those little Japanese cars are very well known for rusting away and I found the POR-15 through the state chapter of my Z car club. I used it on some repair work and was hooked.
On my '74 F-100 I have used it so far to coat the entire frame and running chassis. When the new floor pans go in, it will coat them inside and out.
I recommend it highly.
I've used POR15 and "Zero Rust". I like Zero Rust better.
Heres why
1. Cleanliness and application isnt as strict with ZR
2. POR15 has trouble sticking to good clean metal. ZR does not.
3. ZR can be applied directly from the can, and painted over.
4. ZR cleans easier.
5. ZR is much cheaper.
Im suprised noone has said anything about eastwood yet.I have used both por-15 and eastwood rust encapsulator. Honestly I have found that I Like eastwood more for some of the same reasons as Psquare mentioned for zero rust. also it is $10 cheaper a quart.
Yeah I heard about eastwood and zero rust, I should have made more options said I could had as many as 10 but didnt think it would effect the reslults if the other comes out more then I will definitly look more into it. Far as being 10 bucks cheaper does bother me I am told usally a gallon of any of these brands should coat the frame chassis and under the body. But if it is gonna take more then a gallon the I might start getting worried about the extra 40 bucks a gallon. As not sticking to bare clean metal well there isnt none on the frame and under the boby if it doesnt stick to clean metal I am not worried cause there wouldnt be any rust there anyways.
What I was getting at was this. I stripped my frame of my 76 Torino I had.. and POR15d the whole thing. it peeled off in sheets in several locations because the metal was 'clean'.. This was before I ever drove the car, just sitting in the garage.
That sucks. I was looking at por15 site and it has a metal prep stuf that has zinc in it and it is suppose to apply it first to the metal and clean metal will be etched so the por15 will bond better to it so if I decide to go with por 15 I will use that first. Acorrding to there site it is like a 3 step process. I dont know your circumstances but if I do what they say and it does what you said it did I will be really upset.
so on por 15 it sounds like it makes a mess. I was wanting to spray it on to get every where same with rust bullet but was wanting to know if it will hurt my frame wires? tires? fuel lines? bushings? stuff like that or do I need to just get it on the metal.
I used something called Chassis Saver before I read about Rust Bullet. I did like Chassis Saver though. The black is UV sensitive though, but a very good paint.
I have used both and so far, I am more impressed with Rust Bullet. In my case, the POR-15 did peel off in sheets from painted areas where I apparently did not get the surface prepped well enough. The Rust Bullet (Automotive formula) appears to be more substantial during and subsequent to application.
just a question about por-15. I just brushed it on, is this the way you guys applied it. also i wondering if i could put it over undercoating, i already undercoated my entire frame once i hadded it sanded down to bare metal. I'm guessing i can't put por-15 over top but figured i'd ask
What's this about rust,,,, where? You guys get that stuff? I guess my trucks must have had their rust shots,,,,,, ha ha just kidding, I do have a couple small places I would like to stop, so I am looking into these...
