This thing is worn out and if I shift into 2nd hard, the **** comes off and I have to force it back on. Is there any way to make a screw on type shifter fit on these things? I hate this thing, the one thing I don't like about the truck.
Anythings possible. If you can determine the size of the shaft, and what size a screw on handle takes, you can tap it to match, or you could over drill the hole, and weld it on... many options.

I thought about pulling a shifter out of another vehicle that would be better for what I need and modifying it to work.
i had the same problem ... after trying a few mickey mouse solutions i finally went to the wreckers and got the shift **** off an f-series 4x4 of similar vintage . the 4x4 shifters get only a small fraction of the use that the regular shifters do and are usually like new. it fit perfectly and hasn't come off since (use a hammer and a block of wood to drive it onto the shaft).
of course, you will have the 4x4 shift pattern embossed on the ****, rather than the 4 (or 5) speed shift pattern, but we can memorize our shift pattern with a little bit of study, right ?
RTV Silicone of some sort would keep it on, as would super glue or JB Weld. I have an 8 ball from a local tavern drilled out and JB welded onto my stick.
since my truck is an automatic and 4x4 and purple i polished up an old 4 ball pool ball and im going to drill it out and adhere it to the 4x4 shifter. the only trouble i have with that is how do you drill a pool ball?

Put it in a vice, but not too tight, as you may split it. Drill it out slowly with whatever size bit you need. Once you get a bite at it, it'll go right through.

to make it easier could i use a center punch and then a center drill to start it out

I suppose you could. It isn't a tough material though. They typically have a plastic-like outside and a wooden inside or something similar. They drill out very easily. As long as you don't just throw the drill at it, you won't have any problems with just drilling it out.
