Question AC Conversion Gone Wrong

I attempted to convert my 91 Ford Ranger 3.0L from R12 to R134 with an AC Conversion Kit which worked for about a day before the highside line burst. My question is do I replace the hose and leave the conversion kit in place or should I at this point completely change out the system to 134? I would like to keep the cost down since I originally thought I could do this simple mod for under $50 but I would hate to repeat history.

Thanks for any help provided.

Kevin

To do it right, you have to do more than put in R-134. You need to flush the system, put in 134 compatible seals, a new accumulator/drier, 134 oil and some other things.

Well first you need to replace the bust hose for sure then flush the system, you should replace the orings, dryer/ accumulator cartrige, and then vqcum it down to insure the mioster is out and check for leaks. after that recharge with one can of maxicool and then 134a to aprox 80% of the R-12 charge by weight it is best done by using a temp to psi conversion chart you can then tune your charge to obtain the best cooling effect with out the fear of bolwing it up again .
you can find a chart at http://www.aircondition.com/pressure.htm

You need to install a high pressure compresser cut out switch on your system. 134 can runs at higher pressures than r12. I think they are required by law on a 134 conversion. The government calls them "referidgerant containment devices". They shut the compressor down at a certain pressure to keep the pop off valve from shooting out refridgerent when it gets too high pressure. Its a good idea to install them on any r12 to 134 conversion. i think you can get them at any good parts store. get a goodyear barrier hose to replace the burst one and change the dryer and evac it and then charge the system after you install the cut out switch and you should be good.
