PREMIUM GAS

2011 V10 in a class c motor home. Just wondering if high test fuel helps in hill climbs etc vs standard 87 octane.

going up in the mountains this weekend in our new toy and just wonderin before I go fuel up.

No, it won't.

Premium fuel doesn't provide any more energy, it's just slower to burn. If you buy fuel up at higher elevations, the octane ratings are going to be lower anyway since less octane is needed in the thinner air. "Regular" gasoline will typically be around 84-85 octane.

I run 87 chevron all the time and have not had any issues. If you are looking at running premium gas you might look into a tuner which can maximize the effort.

If you can find non-ethanol it will up your power and mileage at least it did for me.

For what it's worth, Honda recommends using higher octane (89) when pulling with the Ridgeline (normally fueled at 87).

I use premium due to it being the only E0 I have nearby.
Mine may sit for weeks is the main reason for using the premium/E0

Towing with a ridgeline.

This is the v10 forum and last I checked honda didn't put a 6.8l v10 in a ridgeline.

This was a question about gas octane.
Coincidentally I own one of each.

Doesn't the Ridgeline have variable valve timing technology, which would enable it to take advantage of the higher octane fuel?

ok, we went on the trip this weekend, climbed from 2500 to around 6000. Vehicle ran good. I did add some octane booster just to see if it helped and it appears to have but who really knows. I still plan to add a tuner (on sale now at 5 star) and hope to get better throttle response and transmission response. Claim is about 10% milage which would work close to 10 if it does. I also think it needs a free flow muffler and air intake as it really seems to suffer when pushed to maintain speed. again future ad ons.

Thanks for responses.

Army RET- I was mostly giving you a hard time about your ridgeline.

Hank- check out the zoo dad mod before buying an intake. I would also wait until the tuner is installed and see what Mike says prior to modifying the engine.

the engine has a basic scoop going over the rad now, so the zoo dad would be of little significance IMO. I havent looked at the filter setup but it is probably one that is a little restrictive. It just seems when you need power to climb or pass that the engine sems to wheeze when it gets going and I really dont like being up at 4000 rpms when I need some power. Guess this engine is good for HP but not so much torque until high rpms get involved. The sale if going on till dec 28, so I will have some time to get the $$ together to get the tuner. Since its a new MH, it will be gradual steps to make changes.

I can relate to your fear of over revving the motor, but running it for stretches at 4.5k isnt uncommon on steep grades for me. Took some getting used to.
