I took an OEM Black, a working Borg Warner (which I previously said was black, but I stand corrected. The stock image online is black, the physical CPS is grey.) and an OEM Grey.

I took a line of 1/4 oz wheel weights and attempted to suspend them from the each cps, then took off one weight at a time until the CPS magnet could fully lift the string of weights. I found that the OEM black could support MUCH more than the OEM grey and the BW fell in the middle.

Also, to verify what was said above, the OEM Black and BW CPS both have large ends, where the OEM grey has a smaller end.

Youre referring to the "improved" CPS from International? No I havnt. If someone wants to send me one I would be happy to

EDIT: I just looked and cant find it on his website, but you can buy it other places. I dont believe this new CPS has a Ford part number because it is from International and after the time that Ford would be adding parts to the 7.3 parts bin. The IH part number is 1876736C91.

I also wonder what 'other' CPS's would work on the 7.3 since they are ALL basically the same even from other makes.

Along the same lines I wonder what 'voltage' feedback the computer likes best to work with.

After the little test today, I put the black one back in my truck. I had removed it when my IPR took a dump as a first step of eliminating it. Well its back in now and man, it idles so nice again!

I was looking at it the whole time, but I was too tired to see it in TARM's post because it wasn't the very first paragraph.

Here's his post at PSA:

If it causes engine surge or cuts out the Wiper motor is going bad and throwing interference thru the ground wire. It shared a common ground with the CPS and PCM (Can you say stupid) Cut the wiper ground where it joins and ground it by itself somewhere else. This will solve the issue. Advanced Auto with online coupon TRT30 and choose in store pickup $18. Huge dif in idle compared to Ford Grey)

A Ford dealer did the recall on my truck before I knew anything about this. I assume I have the Ford gray. So yall are saying that if I get this new CPS it will smooth my idle? Ive got a spare in the glove box, but I dont even know what kind it is. Ive never had a problem with any CPS, knock on wood.

I just got the CSS1603 to try. Where exactly is this ground I should separate?

I've tried the grey, dark blue, borg warner css1603, and currently have an original black cps installed.

My truck exhibits 0 difference between the four. Still have an idle problem.

Just installed the BW CPS and a big difference in idle, much smoother than with the Ford recall unit. Still need to do the hutch/harpoon mods but way smoother just the same. Almost reminds me of the 283 at trolling speed in an old Chriscraft I used to have.
Also tested the wipers and no issues so far but only ran them a few cycles full on and intermittent.

Keeping your grounds clean and shiny will go a long ways toward reducing idle or wiper-interference problems. It's something you should do every few years, anyway.

Brighten the sheet metal, as well as the wire lugs, with a wire brush or somesuch. Make them bright and shiny! Then use some NoAlOx anti-oxidizing paste on them to keep off the water and air.

There's a couple on the other side of the truck, too, but they don't seem to make as big a difference.
