Purchased a new IP for my 7.3 here this spring from the local injection shop, and having issues with it. It seems to be very lame over 1500-1600 rpm all the way to the top. I've backed the torque screw out to my usual liking, and turned up the little allen screw inside, but she is just a DOG in high rpms. Also have to keep pump twisted to left as far as possible just to make it run proper. If I retard the timing it farts and pops and blows lots of blue smoke. I'm just confused, have had the truck 11 years, and can usually just make the IP dance to my tune. Anyone have any ideas or sugestions? Is it possible that I somehow hopped the timing gear a tooth one way or the other? Or does it sound like the pump is just set wrong internally? I can't really even make any black smoke with this pump, not that it is the goal, but she just feels under fueled somehow in higher rpms.
When you say left, you mean your left facing the engine correct? Because if you mean truck left, (drivers side), that's retarding the timing, not advancing it. (Sounds like you know this already, but just checking)
From what I understand it's not possible to move the timing gear enough to skip a tooth as long as you don't pull the gear cover when you pull your pump.
I didn't pull the cover off at all. I've tried on an old 7.3 block in shop to shift the gear, just to see if its possible, and I wasn't able. I don't know if anyone in this area has the equip to time this block anymore.
Have to agree it sounds like you are still retarded timing. An IDI should clatter pretty good when timing is right. It will smooth out and be quieter at higher rpms, but it is quite loud at idle.
Unless a shop has the right equipment, timing by ear is very hard to get right. The Ferret adapter is an easy way to do it. I broke down and bought one for my truck after changing the IP. Works with a timing light, it senses the pulse in the inj line and converts that to an electrical signal the timing light flashes.
