Timing issues

I’ve read multiple posts on here and watched videos on how to time the 7.3 but I’m really confused about it. I changed my IP without taking the IP gear off my engine and now it pours white smoke out. I replaced my lift pump my IP my return lines and my Injectors. I bought injectors from Pensacola diesel. When I put my IP back in I matched the three bolts up along with that little peg to the hole and matches my IP to the marks on the top side of the IP gear but the marks are a little towards the passenger side. I don’t know how to get the timing better. I can tell my timing is off because my idle is rough and isn’t smooth. If anyone can describe to me how to fix it, that’d be so helpful my truck has been down for like two months now and I’m getting tired of car pulling with the wife.

You need a pulse to inductive timing adapter. Ferret used to make one for under $200 but stopped presumably because they sold so few, too many people too cheap to buy one. Fortunately I bought one shortly after I bought my truck as it's a required tool to maintain these engine. Looks like Snap On still makes one though (https://store.snapon.com/Diesel-Puls...--P645205.aspx). You'll need one of those. You clamp that over the #1 injector hard line after cleaning the line up to bare metal, and hook your dial back timing light to the inductive loop off the adapter. Then fire up the engine, hold RPM at 2000 and see where the timing is at. Adjust the pump then recheck timing, repeat as needed. I use a centerpunch to mark where I'm starting from, the width of the punch mark is a fairly large change, several degrees. Do not loosen the IP bolts or turn the pump while the engine is running, you risk breaking the shaft in the pump. I set mine to 9.5* at 2000 RPM.

Get a pair of big channel locks and rotate it towards the passenger side. If that doesn't make it any better I would look at getting another ip, yours may be bad out of the box

I had this issue as well. It would seem the engine out of my 88 was a tooth off, so they adjusted the pump to compensate for it. It was clearly a shop rebuild, had a sticker, but was not legible. When i put a different pump on that engine its was crazy retarded. Personally, i suggest pulling the gear cover very carefully, and doing the putty on a knife trick. The gear will stay with the cover off if youre careful, a little WD will keep the playdoh / putty from sticking to the gears.
