DeVry unviversity..............

I WAS going to go ot DeVry unoversity here in central Ohio, but I got my financial aid report from them today and THEY (the school) expects me to shell out 450 bucks a month while in school (i bring home around 900 a month) and pay all my bills (currently approx. $400 a month.) , I think that they need to rethink thier strategy, I'm so ticked off I am almost crying. I didn't find out any of this until after I registered for classes, I have also been trying to get into a good school for computer programming for years, but now the damned school wants to rip me off! I am so mad I am calling them weds and cancelling everything I don;t even care now. I think the whole admissions staff makes a commision in this place, the counsellors act like used car salesmen.

DeVry unviversity..............

As someone that use to teach at a computer school and designed some courses, I can say most of the material and most of the courses are way over rated (by themselves!) and cost way too much.

Your money is better spent training yourself and then paying up the $600 or so and getting the MS certificate yourself.

I've thought about that, back when I had more time I could write code faster and more efficiantly than my cousin that was going to school.

...rumor has it that it is a federal law that they cant tell you what or how much in grants/loans etc etc your eligible for until you actually register for the classes...My argument was, "well am I suppose to budget if I dont know what the school will qualify me for...
Something to do with the fedral discrimination laws...yea right, the people that wrote those laws havent been in the real world for a long time...

DeVry unviversity..............

I graduated from DeVry Kansas City in '91. I kinda got the same feeling about the recruiters but the instructors were good and the program was what I wanted. I took the BSEET degree and recieved a 4 year bachelors degree in 3 years. When it was all done I owed about 28,000 in student loans.

Is the $450 per month on top of student loans? Can you get a loan to cover the amount they want you to pay? Check around, you might be able to find a job that will give you tuition assistance while you work. Or maybe an internship in your field of study. One of the nice things about DeVry vs other schools is that they usually have morning and afternoon programs allowing you to work a shift somewhere while you are in school.

Check if the school has a job board. In my last year of school, I got a job at US Sprint working 24 hours a week and getting full tuition assistance. I found that job on a posting at the school.

I hear people at work complaining about $30,000 per year tuition for state schools. After I heard that DeVry didn't sound so expensive.

You could also consider reducing your course load and going longer on the program. This will reduce your yearly expense.

If this is important to you, and you want to succeed then you will figure out a way to make it happen. You will also appreciate it more. If it's not important to you then don't waste your time. Any excuse will do and an excuse is all it takes to keep you broke and in debt.

the way the letter is worded it is a bit unclear, but it sounds like the 450 is a payment to "catch up" what my aid didn;t cover, aprox 4k........

Update 06/06/2003 4:41 PM EDT

My admissions counselor called me tonight to touch base, he called the financial aid department and found that the $450 payment is actually $75. Imagine my relief, that is manageable. I am happy again and will be going to their school.

DeVry unviversity..............

Geez, I guess Canada is a little better for education supp.

Tuition up here is 6000$CDN for University /year (books included) and 3000$/year for college co-op programs (books included)

Thats before you take away anything for scholarship/etc;

I was looking at US schools for law...so much $ amazing.

Sorry guy,

I agree about getting yourself cert.

I read that you got a BSEET degree from devry. I am currently in the CET program and am considering transferring to the EET. DO you remember how much programming is involved in the EET program. Also what is the first job you had when you graduated

DeVry unviversity..............

I attended DeVry for a year or so before joining the Navy. I was in the EET program. I loved the school, they had good instructors, excellent lab equipment and the counsolers were very helpfull. It was however, very expensive. Worth it, but expensive. In addition to the financing from DeVry, I also had goverment loans, and my parents got a PLUS loan. I couldn't keep track of all the financial aid, and got sick of trying. So I joined the Navy, and let them pay for college
