Mandatory school uniforms

Disclaimer: I am OLD school, so my opinion on this one is backwards and certainly not in tune with the parents thinking nowadays....

I say putting in place a mandatory school uniform rule would bring some stability and much needed regiment back in to our educational systems. I also know for the most part, this would be a very unpopular opinion among the students today.. What say you ??

What?! You want rules and regulations in school? C'mon, let 'em dress like hookers and gang members- it's especially cute in middle school. Seriously, my son went to a private school w/ uniforms, and it was great- no arguments about what to wear in the morning. Some public schools here in FL are going to uni's, and I'm all for it.

I like the idea about uniforms for school, this way no one gets to say my clothes are more than yours or what not. When my middle child was going to one school he had a dress code, he was in the 3rd grade and he even liked the idea lol. I say all schools should do this to many problems in school with gangs and what not fighting is was out of control this time in age.

I did it for a year in '89-'90 when I went to a private Pan American school in Brazil. The "uniform" wasn't too bad--just had to wear a white shirt with the school logo on it (I think it had to have a collar), and then jean material for pants--could be shorts or long pants, girls could wear jean skirts. It was state law where I lived, and just wasn't a big deal.

Many jobs require some sort of "dress code", so we may as well get the kids used to it now. They would be better prepared to get a job when they get out of school then, instead of having to figure out that some employers are turned off by gang colors and hooker-wear.

I'm for the uniforms. Cost savings to parents, helps with discipline, bullying, teasing. But then, lawsuits from parents would probably bankrupt the schools. This may be one reason many schools do not adopt this measure. jd

Like a silk dress on a hog. Do you realy think that school violence can be stopped simply if kids dressed differently? Violence is caused by an attitude. It was posted on FTE in another thread a link to a study published by a branch of the US Govt. showing there was alot less similarities between school shoter then previuosly thought. School uniforms would protray the school in a better way to visitors to the school. It would also allow viistors to be more quickly intendified. Also it would prepare kids for later in life when a job requires them to dress a certian way. But with all this said your fooling yourself if you think it will stop or reduce school violence.

i wouldn't say as so far uniforms, but a dress code that is practical.

there is a dress code for schools here, but it has some loop holes that kids love to jump through.

for example, a collared shirt but nothing says how low cut the buttons are on the collared shirt, so you have many girls showing half their breast all the time, but hey, its a dress code!

the guys for example, which applies to girls a collared shirt must be one color, no stripes or anything because it might represent a gang symbol, to me that it petty and ridiculous.

plus, no one in their right mind would where this stuf in public, looks dorky as heck.

sure, they have dress codes for some jobs, but many jobs do not have one also and they are not at work. plus many colleges including the one i go to have no dress code also.

many places in the world have uniforms for school, and it does, as i read before, cut down on a lot of the social class bullying that goes on in schools.

then there always be people against for 2 reasons; 1 because of cost of uniforms and the poor and minorities will often state it is bias against them no matter how much financial aid is available for them, heck, you could give it for free and they would complain and 2, "childrens rights" geeks will come and protest.

plus uniforms, how would they even come to select which ones? different people have differnt standards and taste, even at a professional level. to me collared polo shirts are among the dumbest styles around and i can not even imagine women wearing it like they do, others disagree. i think a skirt to knee length if fine, others would scream about it and demand girls wear skirts to their ankles, on and on.

so uniforms....maybe; a dress code? more likely, i think that could be easier implemented among people.

if there is a unifomr, it would have to be along the lines of a business casual type thing, i could not see going out and designing something special just for it, a business casual would be professional, look good and still allow for a kid to be somewhat of an individual.

It has to start somewhere. School uniforms are the easy part.

Taking the next step and holding people accountable for breaking the rules is the hard part. That's why we're in the mess we're in; no one has the stomach for the hard decisions, and too many people have this idea that rules only apply to other people, but not to themselves.

On top of that, people now just want to throw up their hands and resign themselves to "the way things are".

Youthful rebellion is nothing new; it's as old as man. Read the Greek and Roman philosophers. Kids need to be taught to respect authority and orderly conduct.

Teaching and raising kids is hard, laborious work. It requires discipline and consistency. Adults in this society have dropped the ball. Kids will exercise as much freedom as we give them.

I think uniforms in government schools are nothing more than an ineffective bandaid which fails to address the fundamental problems of government and union control. Its a good distraction with a lot of "feel good" to it, and its easy to do, without actually having to make the tough choices.

i was going to say something along the same lines, but i thought maybe people are tired of my preaching that once again, schools are doing something parents should be doing, and in this case, teaching a child how to dress properly.

but why worry about all those hassles of rasing a kid, the government is here to help!

Uniforms are a terrible idea in school. You are forcing children to dress in a certain way. Kids will always rebel against the rules. Also, you are removing any sense of individualism that your clothes bring you. How are kids supposed to learn how to dress and what works/doesn't if they have to wear uniforms? Uniforms create more problems than they solve.

As I said before, my son went to a private (Christian) school. It's like going back to the 50's. Why? Strict guidelines, and if you don't follow them, you're OUT. Unfortunately, the public schools don't have that option. Also, the parents are required to get involved, and I think that makes all the difference. The result is that there is virtually no trouble in a school like that. If there is trouble, it's comically innocent compared to what goes on in public school. It's a combination of love, support, and discipline both at home and at school. The uniforms were simply part of a much bigger structure. By themselves, the uniforms probably wouldn't make a huge difference.
