School Problems

Watching the news tonight. It seems that teachers are spending $500.00 and up buying school supplies for students whose parents can't afford to do so,I think the school system or the state should reimburse them or at least give the teachers a tax break for their out of pocket expenditures.

The part I don't understand about donating school supplies here in NC a lot is done by local churches,TV Stations, and various business where does it all go if the teachers buy supplies for students themselves?

Then I found out that the school systems here are spending money for trips for the school board instead of buying books which the students need, which I found out the reason my sons never had homework in Jr. and Sr. high, apparently this is true of all the grades since there is not enough books to go around.Seems like they change the books every 1-3 years.

Sorry for the rant

Maybe this is the real problem. The old "parent's can't afford it" is a scam. How much does it cost to give a kid a pencil and some paper in a notebook? Not much, and the parent's should be obligated to provide it. Cut back on a beer or two per day and they could afford it. Maybe the real problem is Johnny is too stupid to bring the same pencil to school twice. Too carefree to take care of a notebook of paper. It's all just more socialist crap. I don't know about where you are, but out here we are feeding the kids two meals each day, and these parent's have the nerve to complain that the kids don't eat well enough during the summer when school is out.

As long as the teachers, administrators, tax payers keep giving them free stuff, these leeches are going to take it and demand more.

Screw them. Let'em grow up stupid if they want to. School should be a priviledge, not a right, and if you don't like it you don't have to go. But if you go, you better be prepared to walk the line, show up to learn, and damn well come prepared.

Okay, I'll see you your rant, and raise you one.

I was a teacher for 29 years and school systems WASTE a lot of money. I used to buy and scrounge a lot. I thinks the Feds allow teachers to itemize or deduct $200 for supplies..whoop-te-do... The lottery was to help education in NC. Lots of luck. NC is one of the faster growing states in the US, and school systems can't keep up.

I have to agree that it is the parents job to,but there is the rare case where it takes everything a parent can make supporting a family. I'm not talking about the ones on welfare or the ones who don't care. When I was coming up there was no such thing as free lunch or the school giving supplies to students but it's not all on the Parents.

The school system should be held responsible to make sure there are enough books for each student to bring home and do homework. It was that way when I was coming up the parents didn't pay for books unless their child lost one.

The school Administrators should not be able to take free trips on the taxpayers dime that is part of the reason for a book shortage here. And When I was coming up they were not supplied with cars to drive for school business they drove their own. So why should they be given all the perks of a city Mayor when the teachers are underpaid and are not given the chance to discipline the student,or have all books and supplies the teacher needs to teach.

You only answered part of my post.

I have not seen any of the lottery money going to schools with the maounts they are bring in that should have solved the problem but like everything else the money goes in someone else pocket and another scam.

I have spent about $10 for school supplies for me and my wife for our school supplies since we have started college in Jan 2007, not including text books of course.

So with that in mind, I can only think of a few reasons people can not afford school supplies.

1. They don't want to.
2. Schools are adding to much stuff fopr class that burdens parents financially and is not really needed.
3. Parents buying luxury items; Instead of buying simple notebooks that cost under a dollar and go on sale at Walmart for 5 cents sometimes, parents go get the $5 notebook that has the pretty picture on it.

I can honestly say I know where there is a family of 3 mother, father(works) and child and can't afford to buy anything other than what is needed. He doesn't drink, wife can't work and a child in school it takes the father everything he can make to pay the bills it is hared to find a good decent place to live without paying .600 a month in rent or more.

Schools are so pathetic on how they spend the money in which they need to survive. It's all government controlled the government corrupts enough things. Local counties should take matters into their own hands for a change.

I don't mind to help out familys that need help. But I will go and buy the supplies myself. Also my son is only getting the plain jane stuff this year. Office Depot has sales going on and twice I went there to get folders that were only a penny a piece and they do have a limit of 20 for that price, then you could get pencil top erasers a bag of 12 for a penny limit of 5, then they have get 3-ring binders 1" one for 50 cents a piece limit of 5, Protactor and Ruler and glue for a penny a piece limit 5. So this is some of the stuff my son is getting. Still have to get some note books and loose leaf paper. Then I buy some extra and take it to the teachers and let them hand it out. No, the stuff does not have design on them but if they work deal with it.

I was one of those kids that got a brand new laptop. Do you know what. It was a big waste of money. They said it would help in learning. Hell i learned more on FTE than i did in Algebra II. I spent more time dinkin off on my labtop than actually learnin during class.

I took a computer class in high school (1980)

our system was cobbled together, we used an ibm mainframe with 1 mb ram, and reel to reel bulk storage

when you typed in the code, it printed on paper, and you learned to "save" each line!

10 PRINT "FTE ROCKS"
20 GOTO 10
RUN

[ NC is one of the faster growing states in the US, and school systems can't keep up.[/quote]

Yeah! NC is one of the faster growing states because all the mexicans know they can get a drivers license issued there no problem!! Then they bring all 500 family members to live there in a 3 br house and they all expect the state to let their curtain climbers go to public school. Then "we" americans have to learn spanish so they feel equal! "F" that!!!!!!! I have no use for the excuse that people cant afford school supplies. LET THE STATE SUPPLY THEM! They are the ones that ok it for the mexicans to go to OUR public schools and let the "TAXPAYERS" pay for it! I play the lottery and pay taxes and Im tired of paying for illegals to get an education on my dime! When does it end?????? I swear I remember when Spanish was a foreign language class that was required as a foreign language to graduate! NOT as a normal class! This just irritates me to no end! Sorry! I had to vent
