Your truck is a perfect example of not all vehicles were OBD-II in 1997. Most Federal emission F250/350 trucks (over 8500 GVW) are OBD-I just like yours.
My information comes straight from Ford, I disregard most of the internet-based conjecture.
As I was doing new plugs/cap/wires I noticed that my wires ( old carquest ones) were routed in the worst crossfiring way possible!!
Wires 1, 3, and 5, 6 were routed right next to eachother in the "pretty" fashion where all the wires route through the holders in 1234 and 5678 fashion allowing the 1-3 and 5-6 wires to be in contact. This is taboo on the 5.8 isn't it?
Still running the old plugs/cap/wires because I hit a snag trying to get the plugs out, but the wires have been re-routed the proper way, and it seems to be running really well. Could this (crossfire) have been the problem all along?
