Not sure why I was freaking about the possibility of needing to replace the radiator. Just priced one out, and local dealer sells them for $269.xx.
Still hoping the issue is just the water pump.
This fricking truck is changing me. I used to think a few hundred dollars was a lot to fix a vehicle. After dropping the coin I have on this truck recently, I am all of a sudden 'content' with $1k! WTF?
Damn, that's not bad at all. I thought they were around $500. I hear you on the pricing. I've dropped around $3k in my "new" truck over the last month getting her right, but honestly, I haven't shed one tear... yet. I bought it at a great deal knowing there'd be money to be invested.
Update: water pump is fine. No crack, and really no wear. Bearing is smooth and pulley had no wobble.
They said the radiator smells like 'stop leak'
Waiting to make sure they can get a radiator here today. (He thought it would be by 2pm!) If so, they'll drop a new one in.
In researching right now, I have read more than one story about people using 'stop leak' and having their vehicles run 20* hotter afterwards. Interesting tid-bit - that is about how much hotter my Excursion is running than it should be!
I've never had much luck getting stop leak out of a cooling system. The black stuff anyway. The only type I will use any more and only in an emergency is Alumaseal stop leak.
X2 on that, may need to do the v-c9 chem flush, the guys here would know if it would break the stop leak down enough tho,I have had good luck with 1800 radiator life time ,I have the radiator in two of my trucks and they have been reliable with no temp or leak issues .

VC-9 is a rust and scale remover, similar to a boiler cleaner. I think it would be a waste of time and 50+ bucks. The black, Prestone and similar, stop leak is designed to plugs things up and does a bang up job of it.
OK thats what I thought thanks 69cj, so bad news for the egr and oil coolers with this in the radiator I take it.I remember back in the day some car lots would run saw dust not nearly effective as stop leak but then again careful about parts you cant see

And in the 60's we would put banana peels in the rear end to quiet the diffs. down.
Sorry about the late update. New radiator went in and solved the problem.
Drove the hour and 15 minutes home in 87* weather and coolant temp never went over 200*! Generally stayed 187-194 depending on traffic.
Tried to turn on the a/c for the first time since last fall to find that I only get cold air at idle? As soon as I'm driving... Temp out of the vents goes back up to ambient.
