94 Explorer EB - A4LD

We just picked up a 94 Explorer last weekend for a few hundred bucks with an issue shifting from 1st to 2nd. We'd have to feather the gas around 20-25 MPH to get it to shift then 3rd and 4th seemed fine. We drove it for a few days on short trips (10-15 miles) to get a better idea of what was going on. On the last trip home, it surprised me by shifting into 2nd with no manipulation, smooth as silk. I stopped again, took off and it did it again, then out of nowhere it "downshifted" into what I can only describe as a granny gear and would barely move. If I crept, I could move, if I gave it more gas it made it feel as though I were engine braking. I've parked it and haven't moved it since. Fluid is dark, but still smelled okay, and it did have a hesitation going into reverse before and sometimes wouldn't even engage in reverse once.

I'm new to the A4LD, and I know they have their issues but what I'm hoping to determine is whether I'm looking at a $1500 rebuild or just a "simple" repair.

Thanks all!
