I have a 94 ford explorer and about a week ago the shifting has been acting up. What i mean by that is, it just won't shift when it is suppose to. TO shift into the next gears i must let my foot off the gas until the rpm's lower enough and then when i place my foot on the gas it kicks into the next gear.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time
I feel awkward replying to my own question but i'm in need of serious help. I'm trying to save as much money as i possibly can, and knowing of a possiblity of whats wrong is good help. When it comes to cars i'm clueless. Please help a fellow ford enthusiast. I thank you for your time )
>i had the same problem with
>mine, same year and everything,
>and i needed to get
>the trans redone.
Trans redone? well thats not what i wanted to hear. HOw much did it actually end up costing, i'm trying to save as much money as possible like everyone else. I also appreciate your help, and anyone elses help for that matter. What exactly was wrong with yours??
I have a 94' Explorer also that went through the same problem with the transmission. I bought the Explorer used from a guy who managed to put 95,000 miles on it in 3yrs. Thankfully they were all highway miles but he never changed the transmission fluid once. I changed it, and that's when problems started. By changing the fluid so late in time, I actually "loosened" things up inside the transmission that were being held together by the old and very thick trans fluid. By doing this, the transmission would not shift to higher gears the same way yours is not.
I first tried to replace the vacum modulator valve but that made no differance. So it was off to the transmission shop and $1200.00 dollars later that fixed the problem.....total rebuid.
I'm sorry if this is not the answer that you are looking for but, I don't think you have any other choice but to have the transmission rebuit.
Is your od light flashing? I am going through the same deal. While driving it doesn't shift unless i let off the gas then it goes, today i replaced the tps sensor and unplugged the battery for 30 minutes took it for a test drive light came back on still havinf shifting problem. Looks like i'm heading for a tranny shop and a bank for a loan to pay for a rebuild. Mines a95 xlt 4x4 good luck
Is it the 1-2 shift or all shifts? The govenor can cause this late shift and that is not too hard too work on. Sounds more like a vacuum modulator. Check vacuum tree for signs of oil. The modulator has a small orfice in it and if it fills with oil, response will be sluggish. Not as convienient but best place is to check is at hose on modulator. These are only $12.
There is an easy repair if reverse is delayed or it hobbles. That old story about changing fluid is so bogus. If it fails, you were allready on death's door.
