Ok, so I've been having a few problems lately that have been driving me nuts and finally last night it all clicked.
I put a new aluminum intake manifold and carb on my '86 F-150 and there have been some issues. First, the carb always wanted to hang open so I put two heavy throttle return springs on there to hold it closed at idle. Next, the gas pedal feels like it's already half way down at it's neutral position so WOT is only like 50% throttle. Then it hit me. With the new intake manifold, the carb is sitting higher than stock so the throttle cable is now too short causing tension on the cable which is why (A) the carb wants to hang open at idle and (B) the pedal doesn't have the right travel distance.
So the question is, how do I know which cable to get to replace this one with? Any ideas?
The length of the cable doesn't matter. It's the relationship of the outside sheath and where it's mounted at the carb, and the center part of the cable that moves. If the cable is reaching from the firewall to the mount on the carb and is not strained tight, then it's long enough.
Some cables are adjustable. Others you might have to modify where and how the outside of the cable is mounted at the carb. You are correct, if your pedal is already down 50%, you have a problem. But if you go out to the carb, you may be able to move the outer sheath to correct your problem.
