On my 1955 ford f100 door there is a pinwheel that is supposed to latch on to the bottom of the striker. I can move this pinwheel about a quarter inch either way before it clicks while the door is open. I would assume it should not have any play in it.. It doesnt seem to hold my door shut fully. I can pull my door about a quarter inch out. But the door is still latched onto the striker. Any thoughts on this subject? And if it needs replacing how do I replace it? Sorry i call it a pinwheel I dont know the correct name for this part
ok I found out the correct name for part I am asking about. its called the star latch on the door. my question does the star latch have play. I can move mine about quarter of a inch back and forth. my door will latch but I can move it in and out about a quarter inch while the door stays latched.
You should be able to turn it (one way) right around as it clicks. Im afraid
the only choice is to buy a new one or rebuild that one. This is a very
common problem, and I too have the same problem, but I shall rebuild it.
Due to the size of the teeth on the back side star wheel gear there will always be a some play, so some is normal. That is why myself and several others switch to bear claw latches to get away from the sloppy factory latch.
Funny, I took a friend of my Dad's for a ride in my 53 last weekend. He said he owned one back in the 70's his biggest concern was if the door would stay shut. He said they always came open on his truck when he went over a bump.

Or around a turn, or worse in an accident. That's why Ford changed the latch in 56.
ok I want to thank everyone for all the information. I really dont like the prospect of door opening on bumps and turns. I read mid fiftys has a bear claws system. Is this the way to go or should i rebuild my old set up? I think if I can get the door to latch better this would be safer. Is the bear claw system difficult to install?
