Another point to consider is the rpm and speed you are traveling up the mountain. The torque of the diesel allows lower rpms, which results in higher exhaust gas temps ( need to add a sensor and gauge) and higher oil and coolant temps.
Down shifting (like in a gasser) and or adjusting speed to keep engine in a happy rpm might be all you needed to do..
What can I do to keep/get my temps down? Any mods or is that just how my engine is?
well, when i did the rebuild after blowing head gaskets, i went with
the bulletproof diesel approach, but it's pricy, and a lot of people
feel unnecessary.
most folks on here seem to use a coolant filter to keep the OEM
oil cooler clean, and a coolant maintenance strategy that falls
somewhere between OCD and witchcraft.
a good part of the chamber of horrors for the 6.0 seems to have
three root causes.... dirty coolant, low vehicle voltage, and badly
written engine control strategy.
my solution was a good alternator, removing all the easily plugged
things from the coolant flow, and putting some tunes from matt at
gearhead on the engine.
So I pulled the EGR valve last night and it was really dirty. Cleaned with carb cleaner and replaced o-ring and gasket. When I look into the hole it is dry but really dirty also.. Normal? Should I do something to clean it, or will that cause other problems?
I believe a followed instructions. watched some videos and read a couple threads. Kept fluids away from the weep holes. sprayed, wiped, soaked up the suggested line, etc. Hopefully that was right.
I guess I didn't read the thread very thoroughly (sorry) - the OP said his oil temp alarmed on his phone (not the same as defueling)! Not sure what "alarmed on the phone" means really..
Not sure about Torque, Dashboss allows up to 3 alarms per PID. So a user, for example, could set a low or Yellow alarm at 210 ECT, a mid or Orange alarm at 215 and a high or Red alarm at 221.
Yeah I double checked on that too (phone??) and then realized he was probably using DB or Torque on his phone (Torque allows multiple types of alarms you custom set too)
Sorry about that. I have torque and I sent the EOT to alarm at 235 (as per the info in the tech folders). My ECT would hit 220 the fan would kick on The temps would hit 221 then the temps would drop. I should have been more Clear. Thanks for the info all!
After cleaning the EGR valve and reseting the CEL code I drove for about 30+ miles and the CEL stayed off. However I still get a little black smoke on a take off from red or when I have low rpm's and I step on it. Any thoughts?
If the EGR is bad it will hick-up and throw a fit, fart out the intake sometimes until you back off when accelerating at any speed not just take off. Black smoke is a lack of moving air because the unison ring may be rusty. How is your boost acting?

Boost seems to be normal. When I step on it I can get it to 24ish, give or take. I think that is normal. If anything would seem out of the norm I think the boost may be a little slow to kick in, but not sure really.
