Hi could you tell me can a engine on a E150 econoline 1987 5.0 petrol.I think its the injector engine. The power steering pump pulley has broken. What i would like to no is can the engine still be started or has the pulley get anythink to do with the timing and it will damage the engine. Also how do i check to see what engine size it is i was told its a 5.0 but it may be a 351.Thank you
The belt that drives the PS pump has nothing to do with engine timing. However, if the pulley is broken, it can damage the belt, which also drives other accessories such as the water pump. If the engine throws the belt, it will overheat from no water circulation.
It takes a special tool to remove and install the pulley from a PS pump. It's usually easier to replace the pump and pulley with another one from a scrap yard or have a parts stored replace the pulley with a new one.
Thank you for the advice but i have found out its the air con pump not the power steering pump.I am going to remove the pump as i will not need it so does the engine need the air con pump. Thanks again
The AC compressor is driven through an electric clutch. If the compressor itself is jammed, but the clutch is not, you can just pull the wire on the clutch to prevent it from ever engaging. The pulley on the clutch should spin freely, and you need it there to put enough belt wrap around the water pump pulley.
If the clutch and or pulley assembly is jammed, you can replace just that with something from the scrapyard.
There is a small bolt in the center of the clutch plate that holds it to the compressor shaft. Once you remove that (you need to hold the plate steady), the plate should just slide off the shaft. It's been a while since I did this, but I think the pulley and solenoid assembly is pressed onto the case of the compressor and held in place with bolts. You can pry it off with a screwdriver or chisel after removing the bolts. Then assemble the replacement in reverse order, and you can use it like an idler pulley.
Look on your other thread. I posted a Ford Racing kit number that moves the P/S pump up to where the A/C compressor is located. That kit is designed for a Mustang, but the truck/van FEAD is similar to the Stang's, so it should solve your problem. You can start and run the engine without the belt present. Just don't run it for more than a few minutes at a time to avoid overheating the heads. If there's coolant in the system, it'll take at least a minute of idling to boil the coolant in the heads. Keep it short and you'll be fine without a belt turning the waterpump.
