Does anybody know why Ford made the frames narrower on the 1973-78 Crew Cabs and High Boys? I just bought a hitch for my 1973 F250 High Boy and it was too wide. I called Curt Manufacturing and they said that I needed the narrow model. Amazon admitted that the Crew Cab needed a different hitch but said nothing about the High Boy. It seems that it would be to the manufacturers advantage to stay with one width.

The real question should be why did Ford widen the frames after the highboy era...
From '61 to '77 highboys (and crewcabs) both shared the straight, ladder style 34" frame.
In '77 Ford widened the frame to 38" (from the cab rearward) making for a weaker frame, they also married the T-case, lowered the suspension, and imo made it less of a "truck".
ND all the crew longbeds also had the narrow frame regaurdless of year. not sure if they would classify those as c&c. i wouldnt think so as they came with a factory pickup bed.
