Pulling a 7.3 - your favorite method for rigging the crane?

Im pulling the front end apart and going out the front...
Going to remove everything up top down to the hpop for clearance in case i need it... motor is getting completely torn down once its out...

That being the case...
Easier to pull the block with heads on, or off?
Got guys clamoring for pics of pistons in 99-03 section...

If i pull heads... what would be my best/safest option to grab ahold of it?
Chain with head bolt thru a link?

Keep the heads on. Pull the front clip, rad, core support...the whole thing.

You got a hole in a piston?

If you're looking for a star pattern from the spray, it's been documented that stock trucks will show the star pattern too, not just chipped trucks.

Thanks Stewart...

You know im no stranger to pulling engines... just havent done an excursion yet...
Clearance concerns were with the cowl more than anything for rigging the crane...
Almost seems like it hangs over farther toward the front of the motor than in the trucks?

My thought with pulling heads now was a lighter load might be easier to handle... they can wait...

Were almost taking bets at this point wether its rings, piston cup, or crack/nozzle holes

Hmmm, ok, honestly I was going by previous engine removals in F250 trucks. I actually texted Joe (CSIPSD) to confirm everything just to make sure I didn't give out bad info. And while the front of the Excursion is almost exactly like the F250's, I guess there could be small variations between the two that may or may not become a problem when pulling the engine. But I doubt you'll have a problem.

I think once you have the front end removed, and the engine DC'd from the trans, you'll have no problems swinging that bad boy outta there.

In the years I've wrenched on my Ex and my F250, I haven't really noticed any clearance differences between the cowl and the back engine/turbo/spider/up pipe area.

This is how I did it:

It did bend the edge of the cowl coming out, and that was with all of the turbo and pipes off. That's the second biggest reason why I haven't started the job yet is I know I need to lift the body up some in order to get it in there again.

Now that's pulling it with the trans and transfer case attached. Not sure how it would worth otherwise.

Hey Chris,

Send me a link when you start the rebuild thread. I want to keep up with how it is going. Also if I can squeeze it in can head down there to lend a hand.
