I have a 2000 excursion 6.8l v10 4x4.
While driving on the highway and reaching 80mph, the suv starts making this grinding sound like it's trying to get into gear. The SUV starts to shake. when i drive at a lower speed it goes away. it doesn't make the grinding sound while driving on back roads.
What could it be?

Little more info on the noise? Front, rear, engine, underbody? RPM related or speed related? Go away if you shift to neutral? Vibration with it?
The noise is coming from the front end of the SUV, between the transmission and the engine. I wouldn't put it in neutral while doing 80mph on the highway. Since the noise starts while driving at 80mph, i think that it's speed related and yes, it vibrates.
I was thinking, maybe it could be the hubs?

You need to shift into neutral at 80, it won't hurt it and then get back with any more info also. Get your rpms back up to what it was before dropping it back into drive.

+1 put in neutral, coast until you slow down a bit before shifting back. I've run mine up to that speed more than a few times and dropped it into neutral, you won't hurt it. That is a huge factor in narrowing it down. If it goes away out of gear you need to look hard at the transmission. Especially if it goes away immediately.
