IS ANYONE ESLES V-10 NOISY? After ours gets above 2000 rpm, and with a load on it, its just plain noisy, the more of the load, r the more gas, the noisier the engine gets. Performance is great, its just noisy, rough sounding.. Anyone elses like this? 52,000 miles on it. I know I posted about the whistle, but I do have that knosked down to SOMETHING in the exhaust, But I dont think this engine should sound rough at 2000 rpms on up.

Edited to say: That at Idle, and up to 2000 rpm, it purs like a kitten, silky smooth..ABove 2000 the engine seems rougher, noiser and way louder.
Upon doing a search on here, sounds like it may be the "flutter" everyone talkas about, amybe I need to raise the octane.. To think about it, it sure does sound like its dieseling. and only does it under load or heavy throttle, when the motor really starts pulling.. So should I try some higher octane gas and see if that helps?
If there is a flutter noise it is most likely fixed by adjusting the heat shield on the front of the tranny case and behind the oil pan. There is a thin piece of sheet metal there that vibrates like crazy around 2000rpm's. It just needs to be either bent out a bit. If the noise changes when you do that then spot weld it to the tranny case. Thats what fixed my flutter. Which at first I thought it was an exhaust pulse from the engine causing the flutter. But it was the stupid heat shield vibrating.
I had that same problem on my 2001 v10 there's a ford recall on the y pipe. mine was loud over 2000 rpm It sounded like valves but it was the pipe Steve
The 2000 V-10 did not have the same Y-pipe as the 2001. The 2001 was the first year for the restrictive Y-pipe that causes the exhaust flutter. The noise from the 2000 V-10 has to do with a loose heat sheild.
According to TSB the 2000 is included in the Exhaust flutter/noisy exhaust?
edited to say: Just curious becuase this sounds like it fits my symptoms perfectly.

Thats curious, I have replaced the exhaust system on my truck and the Y-pipe was not the same as that of a 2001. Not nearly as restrictive as the 2001.
Im not discounting what your saying... Just wondering why the 2000 is included also, it may be wrong also. According to Ford the build date change was 10-2-2000 for the new Y pipe.
Hmmmmmm The plot thickens!
i know on my 2000,around 2000 rpms under load there is an exhaust flutter, not y-pipe or heat shields, just the sound the engines make at that rpm.Sounds like its hammering. If i give it more gas it goes away.If i cruise about 60 mph-around 2000 rpms or so, it sounds bad,i make sure i am above 2000 rpms as not to hear it.
ps i have no y-pipe so it is a characteristic of the factory tuning.

It probaly is how the pcm applies timing and fuel, combined with valve timing. There seems to be many different pcm codes, that may have something to do with some doing it, and some not.
Maybe your I'm not getting the sound right, but before I made adjustments to the heat shield I mentioned before, I thought for sure it was an exhaust flutter. It had that hammering sound you describe at exactle 2000 rpm and only under a load. I put up with it for a long time, until reading in a post dealing with this exact issue a member here told me that it sounds nothing like a heat sheild because of the way it is positioned. So i buttoned up the fore mentioned heat shield and Viola, No more noise at 2000 rpm. I couldn't believe it. It sounded nothing like a heat shield vibrating, but I swear it fixed my problem.
I have checked all of mine, and they all appear tight, How do I check them further? Your right its ounds nothing like a heat shield, But im open to anything at this point.
Which one are you refering to?
Thanks for the all the great input.
My 2000 EXcursion had a bad weld for the shield on the y pipe. You couldn't really see it until you were right next to it. I just layed under my truck and did a visual inpection. One the y pipe, 2 of the heat shield welds were cracked. I just pryed it down with a screwdriver so that there is a 1/2" gap and my annoying vibration is gone. I have a little noise right at 2200 rpm, not 2100 or 2300, the exhaust tone is a little louder, but not a vibration. I think it is just a harmonic of the motor at that rpm. The problem is it is right at 73 mph so it is a speed I drive alot so I just keep it at 70 or 75.
