Again with the EGR...

Hi guys (and gals). Great to be around some knowledgeable Ford people. I have had the same surging/hesitation/cantfindamechanicwhoknowswhatthef***theproblemis with my 92 F150 I6. I just disconnected the EVR solenoid and the truck runs great again. I keep it tuned with routine maintenance, so it always ran smooth, just not between 1500-2000 RPM.
Anyway, I was thinking about the restrictor plate, as it would probably eliminate the check engine light I get with the solenoid just disconnected. My question is: do any of you see any long-term negative effects of the higher combustion temperatures and is the restrictor plate the only fix? Was there never a substitute EGR? Has anyone found a Ford dealership aware of the problem with another remedy? Just curious as I like to have all options available before proceeding on something.

Thanks,
John

LOVE THE FORD TRUCK!

I tried a restrictor plate but ended up taking it off. It made my engine run way too lean! 4.9's want to run lean anyway so this just added to the problem.
Reconnect your EGR, clear the computer and pull the codes. You could have a problem with your EVR solenoid, EGR, or simply some clogged fuel injectors!
I don't think a restrictor plate is a cure all, at least it wasn't for me!

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I replaced the EGR about 2 years ago. The injectors were cleaned and the EVP was replaced by Ford. I just put a new solenoid in the other day and it still runs s****y. Gonna take the solenoid back to Ford and I'll just try some other stuff. Appreciate your help.

Again with the EGR...

Pulled codes before (months ago). 334-EVP voltage too high. Reset the codes and replaced the bad EVP (did not have a smooth resistance transistion). Never another code. Still had the problem.

However, I found out what it was. I also had the popular "air switches to defrost vents under load" problem, so I looked into that. I disconnected the vacuum line to the air controls from under the hood at the manifold and plugged it and the problem went away. It seems I have a vacuum leak under the dash somewhere as I can hear a hissing sound by the controls when the engine is running and the air is off. Thanks for the help people. Got to find out what to do about that now.

Thanks
John

I had a problem mine at the same RPM range. MY codes said that it was my EGR I had replaced it twice along with the O2 senser. I was battleing this for about two years. so I finally took it to a shop and the ran ever diagnostics known to man and they came up with a bad ECM (computer) The ECM was sending exseccive and amount of voltage to the O2 senser. Well I cant aford a new ECM so I'm searching for a new one. THANKS ALL STOCK

John,

You said,
"...I disconnected the vacuum line to the air controls from under the hood at the manifold and plugged it and the problem went away..."

Do you mean you plugged the vacuum source (at the [intake] manifold), then test drove it and found the :
"...surging/hesitation/cantfindamechanicwhoknowswhatthef***the problem is ...between 1500-2000 RPM..."
went away?

I'm experiencing the same type of problem, just wondering.

Jerry

Yeah. Thats right. The little white vacuum line entering the firewall was all dry and cracked, so I temporarily disconnected it and put a little cap over the hole on the vacuum tree on the manifold.
