This ^^^. You have to be real clear with a 97. I've encountered it almost every time I've gone into a parts store. Lots of online catalogs will have f-series 92-96 like the 97 hd didn't exist.

If I may get back to your original question; The only three problems I have incurred in 350,000 miles are; #1. fuel filter canister had electrolysis corrosion and had to be replaced. #2. Camshaft position sensor quit. #3. Accelerator position sensor is wearing out (friction). Camshaft position sensor shows that it is bad when you apply the brakes and the engine dies, but starts when you get off the brakes. This site has been a Godsend and a wealth of information and I recommend that everyone I know with a diesel come here and sign up.

Thanks y'all I know it's been a while. My dad said no to the truck but if another problem like this comes up mow I know. And it was from a dealership. Some people shouldn't be in the vehicle business I'm thinkin.

8th digit of the VIN is the engine identifier, 10th is the year.

Don't know how many were made, but from what i've seen of the people that have them, they're keeping them for life. Finding one for sale is rare.

There are quite a few out there but they are harder to find than autos. Finding one in good shape with lower mileage can be tough though. I got pretty lucky with my 97, but I did have to pay a pretty hefty price for it.
