Found this leaking on my 2003 F250 FX4. This is the drivers side front differential. Leak doesn't appear bad but it is definitely seeping. The rubber ring thing is loose and just flops around.
I checked the passenger side and although it is not leaking either, it has the same rubber ring thing that is loose and flops around.
Here is the picture:
What is this called and about how much should it cost to have a shop fix it? Since the ring is loose on the passenger side do both sides need repaired?
Yesterday I bought some synthetic 75-90 to service the front diff. I should refrain from changing the fluid yet because when that seal/axle shaft is pulled it will drain all the fluid, correct?
Those are just dust seals. But the main seal on the inside of the axle tube is leaking. that's why it is wet. It is better to do both at once, if your mechanically inclined, it's not hard to do your self. there is write-ups on how to do it your self. I did mine in about 5 hours taking my time. You should also check to see if your ball joints are bad while your at it. you have to take the knuckle's and hub's off anyway to get the axles out to change the main seals. that would be a great time to do them.
You also need to remove the front carrier ( gears ) to change the seals.
With new seal's, hubs, hub seals, needle bearings, ball joints, tie rods with ends i was just under $900 in parts
