As some might know, I have been tinkering around the idea of building a custom rear bumper with a pullout storage rack. I could not find a feasable way to make it because of the two crossmembers. So with the help of a few(too many) red bull vodkas, I redrew the whole rear bumper in consideration of making this a "prototype" for fellow members due to the lack of aftermarket rear bumpers.
Front bumper build: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...per-ideas.html
This bumper was built to directly bolt onto a stock application, with a hitch receiver. I did not find it feasable to have a "built- in" hitch receiver with the proper dot class rated hitch receivers. Therefore this bumper to built to bolt onto a "stock" application.
This bumper is drawn out for my truck. It has a hole for an aftermarket 7 pin connector on the left. the slot on the right is for a quick connect for my winch(see link)
I also tied in 4 backup lights. the two middle ones would be tied into the reverse lights, and the two corners ones would run off my f650 dash.
the two stock license plate illumiantion lights are incorporated into bumper
1" plate for 1" shackles. 1" plate would bolt directly to frame. So all pulling will be directly from frame.
Where are you located? I also have been trying to get a custom bumper. I like your design. Pretty much my ONLY requirement for my bumper is 1) Be beautiful, 2) Have a tire gate with a can holder, much like the one pictured below. The one below is the bumper I would like, but it was a one off prototype and the company hasnt returned my calls. Shame, because they are local to me. I would love to incorporate some back up lights like you have, and I love the angled idea on a switch.
Why not have a slot for the 4 pin trailer connector next to the round 7 plug? Also a hole to mount an air chuck where it would be somewhat protected would be nice for those of us with OBA.
If the vehicle you are going to put the precious bumper on is long or hard to see behind (or if you are just a bad backer upper in tight trees and places like me) you may want to consider adding aftermarket radar to that bumper like me.
Car LCD Display Parking Reverse 4 Sensors Backup Radar Price: US $21.14
The wiring to the display is delicate, but the cpu seems well made. BTW, you won't find this written anywhere, but each sensor displays individually. In other words, if the object is only or is closer on the driver's side, then driver's side sensor will only display or will display closer than the sensor on the passenger side.
[O.T. - I have doubts about backup cameras in the bumper -- I have an ebay unit I may try in the bumper for hitching. But I think I am going with a downward facing hi-def camera from the back of the van roof.]
I really like the idea of two sets of back-up lights!

Also don't forget about spare tire access.
I agree.
Maybe use some of the same real estate as the stock plate lights. Could be a decently protected area for an air-chuck.
This was drawn using Inventor, but I did have to transfer the files into a CAD so I could cut them on our cnc plasma table. I dont have any education on any of these programs, just kinda picked it up as I tinkered
Last night I got the bumper cut and bent. Tommorrow its time to start fabbing!
Wow, I'm very interested in how this turns out. The only change I would make is the holes for the backup sensors that are in my stock bumper.
But you mentioned a pull out storage rack... I'm assuming this would take the place of the spare correct? Slide in and out of the frame just like a kitchen drawer? Awesome idea, keep us updated.
I decided to not follow thru with my storage rack idea. There are two crossmembers and i would only have a 3-4" deep rack. And for the cost of all the cam followers, guides etc, I could not find a feasable way to build it.
There is some nice space between the body and frame by the tank filler tube. Maybe someday i'll get the ***** to cut out a square and put a box in there, just like the old 70's camper specials.
