Mine was a 1956 Pontiac Star Chief Safari, Pontiac's answer to the chevy Nomad.. Bought in 64 for $50.00,, it lasted me until 1967 when I left for Vietnam...

 

I turned 16 in 93', and my parents 85' Grand Marquis was totaled just before. They wanted me to keep my grades up and they and not the state phased my driving privileges in. I could only drive first on weekends, then, I was able to get more time in. My Dad had a 79' LTD as his work beater and the only other car available was a brand new 93' Taurus. So, my grandparents downsized (Grandpa drove a Marquis), and my dad purchased a 88 1/2 Escort hatchback. I drove that my senior year and in college before I purchased my 97' Ranger. I had that until 02' when I leased a new one. In 04' I leased again a new Ranger (this time a 4X4). In 07', I bought an 06' 4X2 Ranger and had that until I bought my current 08' Ranger. Sorry, I got carried away because I thought the thread was 'Vehicle Choices', or similar, and not First Ride.

 

77 Olds Cutlass, 455 4bbl, poop brown 4 door. Ugly, but it was FAST!

 

My first vehicle at 18 was a 69 F-100 with a 360/automatic, power steering & power brakes. That was where I learned about FE engines leaking oil at the cork gaskets along the front and back of the intake manifold. When a Monte Carlo tried unsuccessfully being in the same space as my F-100 on the highway I had to get a replacement vehicle.

My brother is a die hard Mopar guy and following his lead, I started searching for a Cuda or Challenger, but couldn't find anything in my price range (circa 1979) or was worth buying. I see an ad in the paper, 1969 Plymouth $995.00 with just a phone number. When I call an elderly woman answers the phone and she informs me it's her father's car for sale. I assumed it was some big boat like a Fury but it turned out to be a 383/automatic Roadrunner with 43k miles on it. I tell the woman I'll buy the car sight unseen, I was coming up with the money right away, she says that the car had been wrecked by her father and he wasn't going to be driving any more, hence the reason for selling the car. I go to look at it anyways, the "wreck" turns out to be her father had scraped the right front fender on a yellow parking pole in the garage at his retirement complex. It was a one owner car that her dad bought new at the age of 75.
Of course me being a 19 year old kid running loose in a big block 4 barrel car, the best way to describe it is I drove that thing in to the ground in about 2 years.

 

My first car was a 74 Bug.

 

I really liked those cars. The Cutlass was the top selling car for at least 13 years around that era. It dropped back when the fwd unit construction Cutlass came to market. But when the older body on frame, RWD cars were around, they had a model for everyone and a LOT of very happy owners.

 

I bought my first car back in 1982 and it was a 140,000 mile, `72 Toyota Celica, 4cyl. 4 speed, butt ugly POS that I paid $400 for. It broke down a lot but I learn a lot from it too. Sold it a few years later for $350.

My first was a 56 f100 panel that never got to see the road because my dad made me get rid of it before I got my drivers license. But my first licensed vehicle was a 75 Firebird Trans Am I bought new. Then it was a 74 pontiac ventura, 81 chrysler cordoba, 75 Ranchero ,85 Lada signet, 89 Honda Accord, 91 Chevy S10, 95 Pontiac Grand Am, 95 GMC sierra, 99 Chev 1500, 2005 Chev Impala, 2012 Impala and now my restored 56F100 panel

 

64 Mercury Comet, 2 door fast back, 6 cyl., 3 speed.

 

My first truck was a 1997 white Ford Explorer 5.0 AWD. Had 230k miles, a bad transfer case, removed front driveshaft. I loved that truck. I found out that it would go 110mph, I also found out it wouldn't go from 45mph to 0mph in 20ft. How I miss that thing.

 

Tough one, what counts as the first?

For my 14th birthday my dad got me a ****** M38A1(CJ5) to fix up.
Jeep wasn't done for a while, so much of HS I drove my dads 56 Studebaker pickup.
First vehicle I bought was a motorcycle, a 70's Yamaha XS650.
First car I bought with no outside influence was a 72 Datsun 510 2dr.

 

1969 F100. Still have it! But maybe that's because I'm only 18...
