Hey guys. I'm in Ohio and I believe I have an injector dead on my early 99. I determined this with an IR thermometer and checking temps on the exhaust manifolds at the ports. I have a miss at idle and light to heavy blue/white smoke that smells like unburned diesel. I believe my truck has AB injectors in it. The only thing I can find locally is an AD. I don't want to take it apart until I have parts in hand as I'm stuck up here and this is my only ride. My question is, will it hurt anything if I put this AD in it and run it that way till I can get time and parts to fix it right? My thinking is even one a little off from the others has to better than one completely dead. Does anyone near Canton OH have a spare AB they would be willing to part with? Thanks for any help.
White fuel smoke at an idle with a "dead hole" (no exhaust temperature) is usually an indication of a compression issue. If that's the case, there is not an injector out there that will fix your problem.
However, since you asked, you CAN put an AD injector in that cylinder and it will run identically to the other seven ABs. I fear this isn't your issue though.
just a thought here. have you ever done the .50 cent mod? you might want to check your uvch first before you drop any cash on an injector. for whats its worth, i'm in cincinnati with A/E , big garage & tools but that is 4 hours away.
I think a bad nozzle on an injector (drooling, not spraying) can cause this, but something else is more likely the cause. I've driven 1000 miles on a lifted injector (coming home from vacation) and made it home to work on the truck.

It absolutely CANNOT be this.
If the injector harness fails open, then there will be absolutely no fuel injected in that cylinder.
If the injector somehow fails shorted (solenoid always "on"), then the injector will shoot one load of fuel and then be empty; it needs to shut off to refill.
Both of these circumstances are also true if the injector fails mechanically as well. No fuel injected means no white smoke (as the OP is experiencing).
If the injector is "leaky", then one will still end up with combustion in that cylinder and it will run HOTTER than the rest (not to mention it's likely a ton of combustion noise would also be present).
A SIMPLE, SIMPLE way of starting any diagnosis of this problem is to pull the PCM relay, cam sensor, etc. (anything to keep the truck from starting) and crank it. Listen for a rhythmic increase in cranking speed once every other revolution. I guess an even easier way would be to remove the oil fill cap while it's running....let us know what happens there.
Put the new AD injector in the #1 hole. It runs great! No shake, smooth as glass, much quieter running, not even a hint of smoke of any kind at idle. Stomp on it now with the 60hp tune on and it will flat get gone. I don't remember it ever having this much power. Apparently this problem has been sneaking up on me for a while. I'm not sure if it needed the injector or not as when I pulled the old one the top two orings came out in pieces. I already had the new one so I put it in just to be sure. Might could of just got by with orings. When I get back home I'm going to go ahead and replace the rest of the injectors and orings.
Cletus thanks very much for the advice on using the AD injector. I'm not sure I would of tried it without your confirming it was ok. But I got to tell ya, you sure had me sweating it with the compression. LOL. If we ever meet, cold beer is on me.
