I'm not doing a frame off restore but want to repaint my frame and there is some rust on it. While most is surface rust, some is a little deeper.I read these claims from POR 15 and ZeroRust that you can paint over rust but have contacted both and they say you should sand down to bare metal.
Is there anything out there that works? I am wire brushing where I can reach.
we use something in the Navy called Vactan. you remove the loose stuff, then simply brush it on. looks like elmers glue when wet. black when it dries over rust
a chemical reaction occurs and when cured, the stuff is a hard coating that can be easily painted over.
13yrs of working on Submarines and that is the best rust converter I've used.
Never used the Navy stuff, but POR 15 I have used. It works good so far. Put some on my 66 mustang about 5 years ago and it still looks good. And yes, remove as much rust as you can

POR-15 DOES NOT recommend you sand to bare metal! Where are you getting your information?
POR-15® is a high performance coating designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal it seals and protects surfaces from water, chemicals, salt, and corrosion.
I have used POR-15 a couple of times and if you follow the directions to clean then prep the metal with their etching solution before painting it certainly works wonders. Just be aware that it is UV reactive.

I’m sorry, it looks like I misread this response, and it does say bare Metal and bare rust. Not trying to bash anyone here just trying to do this once and do it right with a good product. Thanks for all the responses!!! See below I am interested in putting POR 15 on my truck frame which is not removed from the body. Is this product something you Can put right over rust and it will stop it? Is it a one step process .I am trying to knock all the loose stuff off and wire brush where I can reach.
Rob, I guarantee the underbody of your truck is not perfectly clean. In order to achieve permanent rust protection you must take the surface down to bare metal or rust. Properly, clean and prep the surface with our Marine Clean and Prep and Ready. Each product is sprayed on individually, kept wet 10-15 minutes then rinsed thoroughly with water and allowed to dry. Once perfectly dry brush on 2 thin covering coats of POR-15. Thanks, Mike Michael A. Albrecht <O></O> National Sales Manager – Retail/Automotive

if its not a show truck and you don't mind spending an hour under it every once in a awhile, just buy $.99 cans of flat black spray paint from Wal Mart; i did it once in the spring and once late in the summer on my old truck and it always looked nice, and was cheap; i think the most i used once was 9 cans.
Thanks, I ordered it today. The thing I like about it is it converts rust to an inert compound and uses it as a double barrier not encapulates it which incases it but its still there.
I've been using flat black Rustolium Professional enamel for years. Holds up pretty well and I just check it over annually and touch up anything needed... plus the $$ isnt much
So all the black is just from using this corroseal? That looks really good, I found one of my next projects. I have used Por-15 in the past and it is a great product, but it does take a lot of time to do the proper prep and then the painting.
i bought products from Eastwood, it works beautiful on the chassis and axles. On my leaf springs it SUCKS. i don't know if its because water gets between the leafs or what but only weeks after applying it rust starts popping through again......
