Ok, took out the chip, drove it to work for a few days. Runs fine, just idles down at 500 rpm. Seems to not be pinging anymore but I'm still running 91 octane, so Ill have to try out some 87
Read the codes again
The book I have has a few definitions for the codes I pulled. Note: running Mustang A9L
67-MLPS or Neutral Safety Switch
82-Either Air Diverter Solenoid or Integrated Relay Control Module - Not sure what that is
85- Either Canister Purge Solenoid (not hooked up) or "Adaptive fuel limit reached - lean"
Ran it for awhile without the chip, filled up with 87 fuel again, ran fine. Put the chip back in made a trip on the freeway and it started pinging like crazy again, so I took it back out.
Obviously, it has something to do with the chip advancing the timing too much, but why would it start doing it out of the blue like that?
Short of sending it back and having it checked and re-burned, what are my options? Anything else I could look at? It idles way better, gets better MPG, and before the pinging, it ran stronger with the chip in.
Using chips on these trucks isn't such a great thing because usually most only advance the timing, a procedure you can easily do by yourself without spending the extra cash, remove the chip, do the sixlitre tune up (do a search, lot's of threads on this subject will pop up), then compare the performance. If you aren't satisfied then have that chip checked and re-burned.
The problem is the truck idles down at 500 rpm and you can smell that it is running rich with the chip out. With it in, it idles much better but pings like hell under a load
OK, so I had an idea today, what if I got a PCM for a 5.8L MAF pickup? That seems like it would solve several of my problems and get it back to running like a stock pickup again. Does anyone have the code or Ford part number for a 5.8L manual pickup?
I used to have a handy spreadsheet with all the codes and part numbers and everything for all the EEC-IV PCMs but cant seem to find it now.
OK, I found what I was looking for.
Is there any differences in the 93-95 Lightning and the 94-95 Bronco/f-series PCMs as far as one being better than the other? I figured I would just buy a reman unit from work if I can

Reason: More info
Don't waste your time looking for a 5.8 PCM the motor won't run any better than it does on the A9L without the chip and there are no MAF 5.8 computers for a manual trans so if you did have one it would throw a ton of codes and make a fuss about the missing auto trans. And besides by the looks of it you have not changed the stock cam in this motor so this really isn't much of a stretch for a MAF computer.
