1984 f250 have replaced battery, starter solenoid, + battery cable, - ground to block & starter. Ran ok yesterday after replacements & today til stopped at gas station. Can hear starter but engine will not crank at all. Fuel pump & filters replaced 6 months ago. What do I ck next?
If the starter turns (hums like a powerful vaccuum) and doesnt turn the motor its not engaging the flywheel or the starter gear isnt extending to meet the flywheel. Also starter could be getting baked by the exhaust.
Have you tried starting the truck at the solenoid under the hood?
Turn the key on make sure the truck is in park or neutral and that the emergency brake is set.
Use a screwdriver to arc the post on the solenoid.
Standing in front of the truck looking at the solenoid it would be the side post that the positive cable is mounted to and the first post sticking out the front of the solenoid to your right.
If it cranks and runs this way, you may have an ignition problem.
When you say you replaced the battery cable, do you mean battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter or both?
If not both then it sounds like the other is bad, or the solenoid could be. You don't say how you tested it.
Good news! Pulled (new) starter took it back to store to have it tested. Turns out they sold me WRONG one! Gave me starter for automatic not manual. Total fluke it started at all. Put new - correct- starter in & my baby is purring again! Thx to all.
