Whats wrong with this picture?

How does this location look for an oil bypass setup?

Does anyone see a problem or potential problem with putting it there?

That's about where I have my post pump fuel filter mounted, but mine is a bit more inboard to (in front of) the trans cover. It works out fine there.

Also, does it make sense to put a shut off on one or both sides of the housing?

Shut offs aren't necessary. Most of the oil in the housing should drain back into the block thru the line and there only be oil held in the filter itself with it being mounted upright.

Turning the tables,

What are your specific reasons and the perceived advantages for locating it where you did?

I am thinking it will be convenient to change filters having them both in one spot. And more important it should save a fair amount of money on hoses.

Tell us a bit more about that mounting bracket.

Do you have any kind of drawing for it?

Any construction details? Metal thickness?

Is there any welding involved?

It was cut from a piece of 1/4. No welding, just a lot of scribing and a little sawzall work. I'm a carpenter not a welder so its kind of crude.

From the look of the pic, it appears as though, with a "wider" piece of metal, you could have done away with the "mailbox flag" look, and went to a more of a "7" look, based on, you using the top mounting hole for install.

BTW, awesome location, i dig it.
