im trying to see if my balancer is slipping off my 390. i have about 1/4 inch between the pulley and balancer and the pointer comes half way across the balancer right where the timing marks end. does this sound about right or is it slipping off?
At the factory, a rubber gasket is placed between the outer pulley and inner damper, then the three parts are pressed together forming a one piece assembly.
Over time, the gasket age cracks/shrinks, causing the outer pulley to begin to "walk away" from the inner damper.
If not noticed, the pulley will separate from the inner damper, taking assorted belts and etc along with it. May end up in the radiator core. Not pleasant!

I can tell you when/if it comes apart your heart will sink. I had one on my 351C come apart last fall. From the noise it made I thought a rod was hanging out of the block. Luckily, mine didn't tear anything else up in the process. If you have any question just replace it.
Riverguideguy,
There should be a gap between the pulley and weighted ring of the harmonic balancer. The balancer has a threaded boss area on the front for the pulley to mount. I keep forgetting to take a picture of mine for you... However, if the weighted ring is not flush with the harmonic balancer hub ring you could have issues.
