Hi, I have a 2001 Excursion diesel and just bought a large boat to haul. All I've ever hauled is a small trailer but now I'm going to need a brake controller. The boat weighs 4440 lbs and it's a dual axle trailer. I've looked at a few controllers on line and if I buy the cable adapter it looks like it should be plug and play. My understanding is there's already a socket under the dash to plug into. Can anyone reccomend a good brand, should I buy one that is controllable? Thanks, Charlie
Tekonsha P3. Yes it is a bit high, But it is worth it. Real life example: Was pulling a #5500 32 Ft. trailer through Houston traffic one day. The truck was only a halfton model. An idiot cut and stopped right infront of me doing 60 MPH. Nailed any and every brake I had to avoid a possibly deadly collision. The truck was able to stop its self and that P3 knew how to handle a panic stop. No collision and no tailwag. Couple days later was under the same trailer. One of the four brakes were disconnected so I really only had 3 brakes on that trailer. The truck weighs around #4500 plus trailer at 5500 that was right around 10K Lbs. I stopped with it. Once you get them "adjusted" to the trailer, It does the rest for you. I can't say enough good things about it.
I have the P3 and I use it with my dually for hauling my four horse trailer. Love it. I also love that I can store my settings so when I switch to towing my boyfriends car trailer I don't have to redo everything. Getting another one for my F250.
I used to have a different model that was adjustable with the dial on the side and it was a royal pain. The LED display went out on it within a month. I think it was the Hayes. Not a fan.
For my F150 that hauls almost nothing I went with a cheaper model, the Hopkins Reliance. Works well, cheap ($70), and easy to install/use.
