Proper way to use and set up integrated trailer brake controller

I have never used or set up, adjusted a trailer brake controller. I will be hauling a trailer this weekend, so I'd like to learn the proper way to use Ford's Integrated Tow Command trailer brake controller. Any tips or cautions to look out for would greatly be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Set it on 5 to start with.
Hook up the trailer. Before you even move with the truck in park move the slider so the trailer brakes are engaged only.

Then put the truck in drive and let it roll. Trailer should hold you both right there.

If you passed that test then engage the tow haul buttom.

with a speed of about 25 mph engage just the button again. Trailer should be able to stop you both in short order. Adjust as neccessary.

All there is too it.

Now keep in mind when you are using your foot the trailer brake are integrated with the truck. Therefore the trailer will not have ABS just like the truck.

This is just me and maybe it's my truck/trailer I don't know. Prior to this I had an 01 F250 with an aftermarket brake controller and I loved it. On my 08 with the integrated unit I tow a 14500 5th wheel with disc brakes and I have never gotten it right. I set it on max and leave it, that's the best I can do. I checked the system at the connector with a multi meter and it appears to work as it's supposed to. Trailer was in for service and they said the brakes are working as they should. I just don't like the integrated system. I spoke to local guy who is all things Ford and Diesel (Ford Performance Specialists in Atlanta) about removing it and putting a digital aftermarket unit in and they said ... bring it in we'll give it a try. I think I'll go with what I have !!

Same here, I always run them at 10. I'd rather go through brakes a bit faster than not have them when I am in a panic stop.
