I just bought a 83 f150 that someone put an older engine from the late 60s or early 70s in.
I've heard it all from different mechanics that it's a Windsor or modified or 302, 289 and even a 260 depending on who I ask.
Where will I find the I'D numbers on it or what do you guys need a picture of to tell what it is?
Thanks
260-289-302 will have trapazoid valve covers like so: /==\ with 6 bolts.
The water inlet/t-stat housing will go into the intake manifold. The two fuel pump bolts are horizontal.
A 351M/400 will have rectangular valve covers with 8 bolts. The water inlet/t-stat goes into the block, the intake is dry. The fuel pump bolts are vertical.
The bell patterns are usually different as well, with a very limited number of 400s having the SBF pattern.
Once you figure out what family it's in, we can work on displacement. If you can see casting numbers and get a clear look at the bell housing (count the bolts holding the bell to the motor) that will help.
302, 289 and 260 are exactly the same externally, except for color and bell bolts and other odds and ends:
Ok 85e guy..the valve covers aren't rectangular and I wouldn't call it trapazoid either..its more like
/=l (intake) l==\
if that makes any sense..
The thermostat does go into the intake manifold though.
So that leaves me with 260/289/302 right?
I'm not sure but doesn't a 351 Windsor look similar too?
Okay I did one better...I pulled the starter off and got the casting numbers from the block.
Here they are: D9AE-6015-ED-23
I called Ford and they told me its a 1979 LTD engine, either 302 351 or 428 but their books only go back to 1980.
I know it's not a big block so that leaves me with 2 choices.
What about the possibility of it being a 351 Cleavland? If there is one engine that should've stayed in Ford Trucks it has to be the 300 I6..best workhorse gas engine from them.

D9 with 6 bolt valve covers, it's either a 351W or 302. The 351W will have about an inch of valley wall above the distributor to the intake end gasket. 7 bolt valve covers, it's a 460. Eight bolt covers it's a 351M or 400.
