How do I know what it is?
Te Haw here I would like to know how to decipher my V8 castng info as to year and size of engine, all help greatly welcome. I think it is a 302 but am not sure.

here is a basic engine family id list.
Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.
From there it can be narrowed down some by casting numbers build date number and application possibly.

D9OE decodes to a 1979 torino engine, so it is most likely a 302.but it may also be a 351W
look at where the water pump meets the block. if it is at the head, it is a 302. if the water pump is about 1 inch away from the head, it is a 351W
