I am knew to Ford small blocks. Where is the stamping to determine what size motor I have? It is a V8 and probably a 289/302.

Also are there identifying numbers on the Ford auto transmissions? It is a three speed auto.

As for engine identification, you might have to pull the valve covers off and look at the casting number. Maybe there is another way tho.

 

The 289/302 block will have a casting # on a flat surface behind the starter.

Unfortunately you have to drop the starter to see it but at least its just a couple of bolts.

Down in the engine forum there are several threads on engine ID's, but here's a quick rule of thumb. Count the bolts on a valve cover.
FE's - 5 bolts (390, etc)
Windsors - 6 bolts (289/302/351)
385 family - 7 bolts (429/460)
335 family - 8 bolts (351M/400)
