I have been considering using spray on undercoating underneath my hood of my 65 4X4. Has anyone ever tried this? I am a little afraid of what affect the heat from the engine would have on it. (223 6 banger) I have already sprayed it on the firewall and it made a silk purse out of a pigs ear.
What are you trying to accomplish?
Prevent rust? I'd use a product like Waxoyl instead, sprayed only in the crevices (less messy). Putting it on flat surfaces doesn't really accomplish anything.
Quiet it down? I'd suggest one of the self adhesive insulator pads for that purpose.
Make it better looking? As above, or simply clean and paint the underside.
Rubberized undercoating is messy stuff, and if you ever want to take it off...long, dirty process.
I sprayed aerosol uundercoat under my hood just to clean it up and hoping to make it a little more solid sounding. It worked on both counts, but the solid sound improvement is very small. It seems to hold up well with my 223 here in HOT south Texas, but I now wish I would have just scrubbed it all down real good with Simple Green so I could glue some underhood insulation on to quiet the engine down a bit. I'm afraid the undercaoting isn't a good base for glue.
