Garmin ! I use one in my shop truck , love it . My sister in law called me a while back . She had a TomTom . She could not find her way out of Vanderbilt to my house because of road work !She is from Ohio and not at all use to our roads !She tried to reroute , and got the same crap . It only knew one way to 440 . She called , I broke out a map ( which I still use ) and I talked her to the interstate . I still carry maps . Guess I am old school ! I still have a map pack on the tank of my bike ! Guess I am old school .

Don't feel too bad. I'm only 20 and I carry a map for the national forests around here because most don't have cell service and the roads I drive on don't exactly show up on GPS. Also, Thomas guide proficiency is required to get hired at my company.

Sounds like you need a handheld with Topp. I have a Garmin Oregon (I believe) that I use for hiking and have also used it on some fly in fishing in Canada. Show alot more than the NUVI style gps. Down to trails sometimes. Had the entire lake we fished last year in Canada and the nearest road was over 60 miles away.
We have a newer Garmin gps in the F550 and a newer TomTom in the F150 at work. Both are decent, but there are a few things i dont like about each
Garmin - we travel within the state, and for some reason it suggests every city/state besides the one we are in. Takes forever to find the right city/state. It doesnt list a few cities either, that are rather large. Not sure what we have it set on, but it takes us on some really odd routes, usually we know a shortcut that saves time where the GPS takes us on some out of the way route
TomTom - the screen sucks, we can never seem to hit the right button, it always selects one around it. Im sure we can turn them off, but the voice that says directions just talks way too much. Always takes us on different routes then the GPS in the 550...
I am a Garmin fan but remember. The route a GPS uses depends on the settings you choose, or it will use default settings.
Read the directions and set it to your preferences.
I have changed settings several times. Shortest, time, vehicle, bike, etc..
We have Garmin's in the trucks I drive...work just fine. But in my own truck, I use an old laptop (a Dell M1330) with a Dual GPS receiver (the best receiver I have ever used...runs on both Windows and Apple products). The GPS receiver transmits to the laptop via bluetooth. The laptop also contains AE, so when I throw it in my truck I have my diagnostic software for the truck and my GPS in one unit plus I have a computer (wireless card in it) when I get where I am going. For route mapping I use MS Streets & Trips 2013 - cost me $20. I have the whole thing inside of a small case which I can just grab & go.
When I go into the deserts of the southwest, I run a free program called USAPhotomaps (which the Dual GPS receiver talks to)...uses topo quads and aerial photos, so every trail and jeep trail is on it.
