ok a little back ground first last summer i put in a jy engine in my 79 and just used the jy pump that was on it. it didn't work but i was a ways from driving so didnt matter. i'm ready to start driving it now so i swaped a pump i had from a 79 pickup i scraped. i know the pump was good 2 or 3 years ago when i last drove the truck.
now the problem, the steering works turning to the right but not the left. do we think the "new" pump could be bad also or could this be a gearbox problem, if so i do have the box from the pickup i could swap in. any info would be great before i start throwing more $$ at the problem. thanks
It sounds like the one seal is bad (I don't remember the name but I have heard of the problem before.). Swap pumps and see if that works. If not a Saginaw pump swap is recommended.
For no power assist turning in one direction, it's not the pump. The pump doesn't know which way you are turning the steering wheel.
The gearbox has a problem.
One other thought... before swapping out the steering gearbox, I'd make absolutely certain that there isn't air trapped on one side of the piston. It is unlikely to be the problem, but is so easy to be certain:
Jack the front end up so both front wheels clear the ground. Start it, and turn steering wheel slowly from stop-to-stop back and forth. Maybe 10-15 cycles worth of slow full turns. This should purge any air out. Keep reservoir full.
Encho has an excellent write-up with pics on the Ford Integral steering box. Your box may not be exactly the same, but it will give you a good idea what is inside. Most likely a seal has torn/gone bad on yours.

I was about to ask about this. Air in the lines would be able to cause it to not work properly going in one direction right?
The gearbox could be the issue too, do you still have the one from the truck you got the pump out of? On top of everything, I also would recommend the Saginaw pump swap. It requires some mount modifications but in the long run it's worth it. They are pretty solid pumps.
yea i would like to do the saginaw swap but there isn't the best selection at the jy's around here so it may be tough to find one, is there a list somewhere all the modles they came on (ford, chevy, whatever) to make the hunt easier.
Torky thanks for the tip if i get time today i will try to bleed the pump i hope that fixes it other wise i'm swaping boxes. i knew saving all those parts was worth the extra work
I had a general list somewhere, pretty much try to find an early 80s econoline van that has one. Rob the pump, the lines, the bracktry *everything* that way you have plenty to work with. The biggest thing is to make sure the pulley shaft doesn't have too much play in it and that the pulley is a V belt not serpentine. Also if find one that has fluid in it and the fluid looks cleanish, that's a good sign.
