I just rebuilt and installed a power steering pump in my 79 F-150 2WD and I don't get any power steering. The pump actually worked fine prior to my messing with it, it just leaked a lot. Does anyone know whet to look for in tracking down this problem???
What exaclty did you do to your pump? I work with pumps and steering boxes everyday. There can be a lot of things that can go wrong with that stuff. Have it ever run dry? If so your box may need to have all the seals changed in it. There isn't really much to doing that. Seal kits are cheap. Let me know how you make out.
I haven't run it dry. The old pump leaked quite a bit so when I was doing an engine swap I took advantage of the downtime to install a rebuild kit from Checker Auto. It was basically a bunch of O-rings. Prior to the rebuild the pump actually worked just fine. Now I get no power steering assist. I haven't driven it much, basically just up and down the drivewaya dozen times or so while turning the wheel back and forth. I added some fluid about half way theough the excersize and the level seems to have stablized. I do see a little foam, but I attribute that to a little air being worked out of the lines. It is my understanding that these systems are self bleeding and the only thing I should need to do is turn the wheel a few times to get it ready to go.
When you replaced O-rings on pressure fitting, did you install
the one towards the inside of the pump in the correct groove ?
If not, you may have blocked hole in the side of it. This is easy
to do---check instructions with your kit, it should show this. Let
me know what you find. I have had ongoing battle with PS pumps in
my truck---long story... And if this isn't your problem, I'll look
in my manual / papers... J.R.
I have a problem with my power steering too after having the engine out i my 79 f150 4x4. It keeps foaming and overflowing and is quite tuff to turn. My dad says because I disconnected the lines there is air in the pump. I have tried turining it bck and forth while on jack stands. Should I be doing this with the engine running or not. Changed pump but it still does it. Any advise would be appreciated.
When I bleed my system, I turn the PS pump pulley by hand
( in proper direction ) until no bubbles ( this eliminates big air-pockets from blowing fluid all over when engine first started...) check fluid---then with belt re-installed & engine running, turn wheel end-to-end until pump quiets. Don't hold wheel at stops !
And watch fluid level---don't overfill... Good luck. J.R.
