The alternator in my son's 1984 [4.9L with factory tachometer] failed. He was on his way to my house and called, describing the discharging as witnessed by diminished output of A/C [warm April day in the south], stereo, ammmeter indicating discharge, etc. He mentioned that the tachometer was registering very low. By the time he arrived, the tachometer needle was frozen @ 6000 RPMs and stayed there even after the key was turned off.
We checked all electrical connections and determined the alternator was no longer charging. The battery was charged overnight @ 2 amps and the alternator was rebuilt.
The tachometer still was stuck until driving ~1 mile and at that point, it returned to functioning normally?
Perhaps the malfuntioning of the tachometer was coincidental, but it has never acted up, previously.
