1986 F150 Code Scanner

Hi all. New user here. Love the site and all the feedback.

I have a 1986 F150 6cyl 4spd 95k miles. It runs pretty good but kind of skips in 4th gear when I run about 45+ mph. I bought a Actron Code Scanner to hook up and hopefully read some codes and figure out what the issue might be.

Problem is, I cannot locate the OBD connector under the hood. Searched and search but nothing. Perhaps it got taken/cut off at some point???

1. Anyone know where exactly the connector on an 86 should be?
2. If its truly not there, have any suggestions? Would I need to pull the wiring from a junker and install on mine in order to have the connections?
3. Could it be my o2 sensors and/or carb? Not sure that either have been replaced or the carb rebuilt at any time.

Anyway..... just looking for some suggestions.
Thanks all.

Here's a link which probably won't help much.

Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test

I did a little searching, and it seems around the master cylinder area is a good place to look. My 86 ranger has it tucked down near the pass side hood hinge.

I think I've seen it near the starter solenoid & heater core.

85 and 86 the OBD-I test port is near the starter solenoid on the right fender. You will only have a single O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold and it will only have one wire.

Thanks guys. Every little bit helps. I did manage to find tucked away a wiring harness that has been cut away!! Argh. Anyway, it looks like 5 wires. Does anyone know the wire color combination for the ODB connector? Perhaps, if these are the right wires, I can rig something to get the connection. I think I'll be hard pressed to find a connector although I am heading to the boneyard tomorrow.

Ok, the four into the main plug are White/Black, Black/White, Tan/Red and Dark Green/White. the single wire to the self test output is White/Red. In each case the second color is the stripe color.

The main plug has 6 pins, looking at the end you have White/Black, Dark Green/White and Tan/Red across the 4 pins reading left to right, the two underneath, only the left one has a wire in it, the Black/White.

The colors changed in 1987, and I think there is one less wire, but I am not positive.

I think thats it! I have 6 wires which were cut and hidden away. Now I just have to match them up and I should be good to start diagnostics.

Many thanks for all your input!

The only issue I see is the fact that I can only account for 5 of the 6. I have an engine harness here from an 86, but it was a 302 EFI engine. I will look at it later and try to get you a decent picture of the test plug and wires.

Ok, as promised here are the pictures of the test plugs. The first is the EFI 302 plug with the colors called out, the second is the face of the plug with the colors and locations for the 300 feedback carburetor system.

You may have to download and open in paint to read them well enough.

Wow! Thanks for the great pics and color coding Bill!! Greatly appreciate it.

I think I am in for a big challenge here. I went to the junk yard and found an 84 F150 and pulled the connector I'm looking for off of what what left of the wiring. Thats PIC1. Its very close to what you the pictures you sent over. It is also attached to another connector that I'm not too sure of. I do have that one on my truck PIC2 but the wiring doesnt seem consistent with what I pulled.

And PIC3 is the wiring I have to deal with.

Not too sure where the single plug comes into play either. So I think I'm heading to another local yard which I found out has a couple 86's. I'll see what wiring they have and hopefully can pull out a more complete set so I can figure this mess out.

Thanks again for all your input! Greatly appreciated.

The MAP sensor on the 86 models is very close to the diagnostic connector, the Black/White wire runs to it from the connector (that's why there are two leads on that terminal). Sounds like we at least have you headed in the right direction.
