Straight pipe

The bracket that holds the pipe from the cat back broke off, but the one on the cat seems fine. I have been using wire to hold it together for a while, but it must be tightened every month or so. I have never really thought about it before, but I have been thinking about maybe putting on a straight pipe, from the cat. No duals, no fancy stuff, just a pipe to replace the old one. From what I have seen they can be as cheap as $20, it just needs to be bent. My question is for those that have gone my route, what is the best set up. I don't want it loud, maybe twice as loud as stock/muffler, but a nice deep rumble. How loud would just a 3" pipe be? I have a 1994 ford explorer V6 4.0L.

Why not take it to a muffler shop and actually get it fixed?

3" pipe will sound like crap, anything over 2.25" is too large for a 4.0L V6.

Its too much money, and I doubt they could fix it. I've tried welding it, just too much rust now. If I can't make it have a deep rumble, I'll leave it how it is.
