Motor is in my 79 bronco and is not original. Am guessing its a 77 because that is what the tag on the valve cover says. I am also guessing its out of a car since they had to cut the frame rail to fit the passenger side manifold in and it has bot a front dipstick and one on the driver side down in the pan. Now the question is what timing set do I go with? I jumped on oriellys website and came up with Cloyes C3005K - Timing Set | O'Reilly Auto Parts from a 77 f150 which is the same as what should go in a 79 bronco 400 but since mine is a 77 car engine I searched that and came up with Cloyes C3009K - Timing Set | O'Reilly Auto Parts for a 77 thunderbird. Will they both work? Is one more desirable then the other? Before you guys suggest it I'm not going to bother with a straight up double roller set yet as I can't swing the cash for it and a cam set at the moment which I plan to do later on down the line along with some other mods I'm stocking up parts for.
You are going to want a set that has the 3 keyways and use the zero slot. If you want a stock replacement that will be at zero just order one for a 1970 351 Cleveland.

If i do the stock 70 set do i just line up the dots like i would normally? I plan on getting one of the double roller multi position sets later on down the road when i do my cam intake carb and header swap
just checked on a set from a 70 ltd its the same part number as the the one from a 77 truck engine will it still work on a car engine?
From about '72 on, Ford retarded the cam timing to help with emissions, which did nothing for performance.. Check the timing dot on the crank sprocket of the timing set you're considering - the dot should be in line with the keyway. If memory serves, the Cloyes sets aren't retarded, so, the one for the LTD should be okay.
I got it (the one from the ltd) I did notice on the one for the truck motor (same number as the 70 ltd) that the timing mark did line up with the keyway and the one i pulled off the timing mark is offset. Got it installed got the timing covered cleaned up and installed with a new crack seal water pump is on balancer and crank pulley are on. Rain (not a chance the bronco will fit in the garage) and lack of time have kept me from getting it completely done
yes and no the driverside still dumps smoke especially under throttle and cylinders 2 and 4 still make no difference in idle if i pull the pull wires. It does however run smoother with a bit more throttle response
How much in & out play did you have in the outer fuel pump eccentric ring? I installed a Comp Cams 2121 double roller set in my 400, and can move the outer fuel pump ring in & out like 1/4" is this normal?? Been so long since teardown I don't remember. I'll see if I have the old cam gear laying around to check against that...
I don't think my chain is compatible looking at your pics. My cam gear does not have the two oil grooves for the eccentric, and the "nose" around the bolt hole sticks out further.
