Hello,

The answer is....it depends.

If you want a 12v positive ground alternator and battery, you can install that with some fabrication for alternator brackets. You can use the 6v starter & it will crank twice as fast. You will probably also want to convert the ignition system and lighting to 12 v.
There are 12v to 6v reducers from places like Speedway Motors that you can use if you want to keep all of the original gauges. Look here: Voltage Reducer from Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop

Another path is to completely re-wire the whole truck with new harness. There are several available for around $200, but you do have to buy an alternator, battery, all of the light bulbs, and you'll have to do something about your gauges.

Keep in mind that your existing system is a 6v positive ground, so if you keep part of it and discard part of it you'll have to pay attention to polarity. A good approach for an alternator is to use a GM 1 wire unit. Summit Racing has a few of their own brand that are repackaged GM units and are priced right.

Speedway does have a 6v to 12v conversion book that is probably a good reference.

You should post some pics of your truck!

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

There are a few out there. I used this one from Painless wiring: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/prf-10102/overview/

At the time they had a $100 rebate, so it was around $200.

Others will weight in, but EZ wiring is a good choice: Wiring Harness

Here's a link for Speedway's store brand: Speedway 20 Circuit Wiring Harness - Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop

All of these include a new fuse block, modern fuses. I think they all use a GM connector for the turn signals at the steering column which is more or less the industry standard.

I bought an EZ wiring harness for mine, haven't installed it yet but am very impressed with the quality and price. The conversion to 12v is fairly straight forward, the starter will handle it fine, replace all the globes, a reducer for your gauges. On flatheads the generator is the hardest bit, either replace it with a 12v generator and regulator, have your generator converted to 12v or spend the big $$ and get one of the alternators that look like generators.

What are you planning that needs 12V? I am a big advocate of keeping things stock, including 6V positive ground. With good parts in good tune a 6V system will work very well. Also, if anything does give problems, the factory shop manual tells you almost everything you need to know. I have driven 6V stuff as daily transportation and never had a problem because they had 6V.

I agree. Unless you are adding a 12 stereo, or air conditioning, a 6 volt will serve you fine. Make sure your cables are 0 gauge or 1 gauge and your connections are clean.

Yes and no.

The stock radio was 6V only. If a lower power radio is ok with you then a 12V radio can be run with an inverter. My Dad's 40 sedan was set up this way by the previous owner. If you want a 4 speaker 300 watt stereo then you need 12V.

If your newer engine has a carburetor, points, and a 6V starter from an earlier engine will bolt on, then yes it will work fine on 6V. If you want fuel injection, electronic ignition (other than the Pertronix points replacement), and no 6V starter can be found, then you will have to convert to 12V.

What are you planning for an engine? I also advocate keeping the flathead.
