Once again, I need the advice of multiple individuals more experienced than I (which is every single one of you!). 2003 7.3, 140,000 miles. Took the fifth wheel on a quick trip this weekend and while at the RV Park the truck would not start. Turned over and over, but would not start. Waited a few hours, then it started, but ran for about 10-15 minutes. Then total shut off. Same repeated sequence for the next 24 hours. Even when on the Interstate driving at 75, after about 10 minutes the truck simply acted as if the key was suddenly turned off. Because I've read this forum some, I happened to have a new Cam Sensor in my glove box. Replaced the old with it this morning, then it started right up, but ran for 10 minutes and again, total shut down.
Oil level is good, and it always starts after a couple of hours, but won't run for more than 10-15 minutes. I had to leave it in the RV Park, since I have to go to work in the morning. Will have it towed for repairs. Any ideas as to what they should look for? Thanks in advance for advice to a total novice.
Have them ohm out the ipr coil before and after it shuts down...
How long since your last oil change?
.
I am thinking the same thing. Try a new IPR coil. I have had this exact thing happen to three of our trucks. My personal F-450 and two Cat 3126 engines in our work fleet.
Another thing to check is the IPR wire harness. For some reason they can end up in pretty bad shape for some strange reason...
A bad ICP can possibly do this. Is there haze when you idle? Does the engine get quieter before it dies? When it dies, you can try to unplug the ICP and see if it starts back up.
Thought I'd give an update for all those interested and my thanks to everyone who offered advice. Since I had to work this week and the truck and my 5th wheel were both at an RV park, I had to have the thing towed to a repair shop. They wound up replacing my high pressure oil pump, since they claimed the oil pressure was low. But when I called them during the repair, they also said the oil pump they got from the parts store "wasn't working" right. When I picked up the truck on Thursday of last week, the oil pump had been replaced, along with the IPR valve. I'm thinking there was a good chance it was the IPR valve all along, and the oil pump may not have needed replacing. Repairs total cost me over $2,000. Just a bad circumstance where I was out of town and had to leave it to a shop to fix it. And man, did I ever pay for it.
Thanks for posting up the resolution. Sometimes things just don't work out the best possible way, but at least you are back on the road. Keep the old hpop as a spare or core.
